Averaged 10.8 points and 9.1 rebounds per game as a freshman at Stanford
FORT WORTH – Just 10 days removed from a repeat run to the Elite Eight, TCU women's basketball has already begun reloading for next season.
The Horned Frogs and head coach Mark Campbell announced the signing of Stanford transfer Lara Somfai to their 2026-27 roster.
A 6-3 stretch forward, Somfai averaged 10.8 points and 9.1 rebounds per game while starting all 32 games for the Cardinal during her rookie campaign. She ranked fifth among all players in the ACC and 10th nationally among all first-year players in rebounding average. Somfai was one of six freshmen and one of only two freshmen at the Power Conference level who averaged at least 10 points and nine rebounds per game in 2025-26.
Somfai was one of the most coveted post players in the transfer portal. She was a consensus five-star recruit coming out of IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, and was graded the No. 12 overall prospect in the class of 2025 by ESPN HoopGurlz. Somfai was tabbed a McDonald's and Jordan Brand Classic All-American and closed out her prep career by playing in the Nike Hoop Summit for Team World.
Originally from Mór, Hungary, Somfai grew up in Adelaide, Australia and has since competed for Basketball Australia since 2023.
Somfai will be a sophomore for the Horned Frogs and has three seasons of eligibility remaining.
She racked up a slew of conference and national accolades during her lone season on the Farm. Somfai was chosen to the ACC All-Freshman team at season's end and was honored as ACC Rookie of the Week on four occasions. She additionally was named the U.S. Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) National Freshman of the Week on Nov. 25.
Somfai left an imprint on the all-time records list for both Stanford and the NCAA.
She accumulated 344 points, 291 rebounds, 49 assists, 24 steals and 22 blocks over the course of her first collegiate season, becoming the first Power Conference freshman to post the cumulative stat line since 2014.
Her seven double-doubles were the most by an ACC freshman in 2025-26 and most for a Stanford freshman since Chiney Ogwumike, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2014 WNBA Draft, had 11 for the Cardinal in 2010-11.
Somfai delivered one of the finest single-game performances against Pitt on Feb. 5. She racked up 23 rebounds, 15 points, eight assists, three blocks and two steals in leading the Cardinal to an 86-65 victory. She is one of only two players in NCAA history to put up those numbers and the only player to do so as a freshman.
Her 23 rebounds set an ACC freshman record, were the most by a Power Conference freshman in 2025-26 and most by an ACC player in 12 years.
The clinic vs. the Panthers marked one of seven games in which she pulled down at least 13 rebounds. Somfai scored in double figures in 20 games, highlighted by a career-high 19 points at Georgia Tech on Feb. 8.
She ranked seventh among all freshmen in total rebounds (291) at season's end.
Somfai is the second Stanford transfer with Australian roots Campbell has signed, joining two-year letter winner Agnes Emma-Nnopu.
