North Carolina transfer averaged 10.8 points and shot 42 percent from deep in 2025-26
FORT WORTH – TCU landed its next sharpshooter, signing North Carolina transfer guard Lanie Grant to its 2026-27 roster.
Grant played two seasons in Chapel Hill, helping the Tar Heels notch back-to-back Sweet 16 appearances. She averaged 10.8 points and 2.3 assists per game while shooting 42 percent from distance this past season. Grant's 3-point percentage was the second-highest among all ACC players and a top-20 clip nationally.
Originally from Midlothian, Virginia, Grant reclassified a year early to enroll at North Carolina as a freshman in 2024-25. She was crowned the 2024 Virginia Gatorade Player of the Year and graded the No. 59 overall recruit in her graduating class by ESPN HoopGurlz.
She will be a junior for the Horned Frogs and has two seasons of eligibility remaining.
Grant, 5-9, embraced a larger role in the Tar Heels' offense as a sophomore. She earned 29 starts across 34 outings while logging more than 29 minutes per game. Grant increased her scoring average to 13.6 points per game across her final 17 games of the season, leading North Carolina to a 14-3 record. She shot a sizzling 47.2 percent from deep and scored in double figures 13 times in that span.
In total, 10 of her 17 double digit scoring efforts came in conference play, highlighted by a career-best 21-point outing in the Tar Heels' victory over Virginia Tech in the quarterfinals of the ACC Tournament. Grant connected from distance at least three times in 12 games. A multi-dimensional guard, Grant finished as North Carolina's assists leader in 10 games and dished out a career-high five dimes on three occasions.
Grant carved out a rotational role on the Tar Heels' 2024-25 squad her freshman year. She appeared in all 37 games, starting two and averaging 7.3 points, 1.8 rebounds and 1.1 assists per game. She led the Tar Heels in scoring in four games, including two in ACC action, and scored in double figures 11 times en route to attaining ACC All-Freshman team accolades. Grant was tabbed the Tamika Catchings National Freshman of the Week by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association on Dec. 23, 2024, after averaging 14 points and four rebounds per game across victories vs. Florida and Norfolk State.
She starred at James River High School before beginning her college career. Grant garnered first team All-State honors all three years and was a two-time recipient of Metro and Region Player of the Year awards. She averaged 28 points, seven rebounds and five assists per game as a junior. Grant still holds the Virginia High School League career record for free throw percentage (.874).
Grant has been a fixture within USA Basketball. She won a gold medal at the 2023 FIBA U16 Americas Championship, averaging 11.2 points per game throughout the tournament. Notably, she was also selected to join the Jr. NBA/WNBA Court of Leaders in 2024.
TCU anticipates publicizing additional portal signings in the coming days.
