FORT WORTH--TCU junior Helena Sverrisdottir has been named Mountain West Conference Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday. The honor marks the seventh career MWC weekly award of her career, including the second this season.
She is one of only two players to have earned a pair of conference accolades this season.
Sverrisdottir averaged 21.5 points, 8.5 rebounds, 6.5 assists, 2.0 steals and 1.0 blocks per game while leading TCU to a 2-0 record vs. Houston and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi last week.
In the Horned Frogs' 66-61 victory over Houston, the Hafnarfjordur, Iceland, native tallied 26 points on 10-of-17 shooting (.588) while adding six rebounds and two assists. Her point total vs. the Cougars was just one shy of her career-best effort and was a TCU individual season high.
Sverrisdottir went on to record only the second triple-double performance in school history and in the MWC, with 17 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists in a 78-74 win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. She reached her 1,000th-career point during the game in addition to her 300th-career assist to become the only player in TCU history with 1,000 points, 500 rebounds and 300 assists in a career. She shot 5-of-8 shooting (.625) from the field, including 2-of-4 (.500) from beyond the arc and 5-of-6 (.833) from the free-throw line.
No. 25 TCU returns to the court Wednesday, when it begins Mountain West Conference play at Air Force. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. MT.
