
Lady Frogs Regroup with Win over Texas Southern

FORT WORTH—The TCU women's basketball team bounced back from its first loss of the season with an 85-55 victory over Texas Southern Monday afternoon at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum. The win marked the squad's 10th straight at home dating back to last season.
TCU's season record improved to 3-1, with each win coming at the DMC. Texas Southern dropped to 1-3.
Five Lady Frogs scored in double figures to help the squad regroup from Saturday's tough 74-70 road setback against No. 20 Oklahoma. The team shot 42.9 percent from the field for the game and turned the ball over only 13 times after totaling a season-high 24 in its loss at OU. TCU also dominated on the glass Monday to the tune of a 46-35 rebounding advantage, which included 21 offensive boards.
Most impressive from TCU was its distribution on the offensive end of the court. The team finished the game with 27 assists, which tied for the sixth-best total ever for a Lady Frog squad. The number was the most for the program in a single game since a 28-assist performance against Grambling State on Dec. 21, 2000 in Jeff Mittie's first season as head coach.
Junior guards Emily Carter and Helena Sverrisdottir shared top scoring honors for TCU with 12 points each. Carter drilled 3-of-4 attempts from behind the arc, including shots on consecutive second-half posssssions. She added four assists. Sverrisdottir had her typical solid day by chipping in six assists and three steals. She went 5-for-5 at the charity stripe. Freshman forward Starr Crawford, who was named Mountain West Conference Player of the Week on Monday, totaled 11 points, eight rebounds and a career-high four blocked shots.
TCU's bench came to play Monday, outscoring the Tiger bench, 39-6. Leading the Frogs reserves was an 11-point effort from junior forward Rachel Rentschler, who reached double figures for the first time this season. Senior forward Chantelle John added 10 points by shooting 5-for-5 from the field, while freshman guard Hannah Christian dished out a personal-best six assists to go with a career high in points (six).
Three TSU players scored in double figures, including forward Inisha Daughtry, who recorded a double-double featuring 14 points and 10 boards. Guard Jasmine Cannon and center Gabrielle Rosigi each had 11 points, with Cannon adding a team-best five helpers.
The Tigers hit the floor to start the game by challenging the Frogs early. The game was tied at 18-18 in the opening 10 minutes before TCU took charge, ending the half on a 24-11 run to claim a 13-point lead at intermission, 42-29. Most of the damage was done in the paint, as TCU totaled 14 points in the paint during the opening period's second half, although Sverrisdottir and senior guard Eboni Mangum did each add key 3-pointers.
Returning the floor after the break, the Frogs put the game away early with a 12-2 run to open the half to move ahead by 23 points. The team recorded its largest lead at 78-43 with 5:45 remaining on a free throw by junior guard TK LaFleur.
TCU returns to the road this weekend, as it spends its Thanksgiving break in the Bahamas for the Junkanoo Jam in Freeport. The Frogs open the tournament Friday with a 10 a.m. CT matchup against Minnesota. They then play either No. 9 Xavier or No. 18 Kansas the following day at Noon or 2:15 p.m. CT to close out the tourney.
