FORT WORTH—Junior guard Helena Sverrisdottir nearly had a triple-double and senior guard Eboni Mangum scored a career-high 17 points to help lead TCU to an easy 109-30 victory over Houston Baptist in the Lady Frogs' season opener Sunday at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum.
TCU won its 10th season opener in 11 seasons under head coach Jeff Mittie.
Sverrisdottir and the Frogs jumped out to a sizeable early lead and never looked back, breaking the 100-point barrier for the first time since the 2006-07 season. The victory was the second-most lopsided win in program history, behind only an 80-point decision over Prairie View A&M on Nov. 30, 2001 (103-23).
TCU blitzed the Huskies from the opening tip, running out to a 24-2 lead in the game's first 7:22. The Frogs reeled off a 21-0 run while holding the Huskies scoreless over nearly a six-and-a-half minutes stretch. The squad had built the lead to 60-13 by intermission.
Sverrisdottir totaled 13 points, 10 assists and nine rebounds, as she fell just short of joining former Frog Sandora Irvin as the only players in school history to record a triple-double. Irvin accomplished her feat with 20 points, 18 boards and 16 blocked shots on Jan. 16, 2005 against UAB.
Not to be outdone, Mangum led a balanced TCU scoring effort featuring seven players in double figures with 17 points, a total she had reached twice prior while playing for Louisiana Tech (2005-07). Mangum was playing in her first regular-season game since missing the final half of the 2008-09 season due to knee surgery. Boosting her scoring total Sunday was an 8-for-8 showing at the free-throw line.
Senior guard TK LaFleur and junior guard Emily Mangum, both fresh off earning All-Mountain West Conference honors a year ago, totaled 15 and 14 points, respectively. LaFleur made a trio of 3-pointers.
While TCU's veterans did their part, a pair of freshmen also stepped up after kicking off their careers in the starting lineup. Starr Crawford, who had a double-double with 11 points and 11 boards, and DeLisa Gross, who scored 13 points, became the first true-freshman duo to begin their careers in the starting lineup in the 11-year Mittie era.
Sophomore guard Antoinette Thompson also reached double figures off the bench with a career-high 10 points.
TCU continues its season-opening, two-game homestand Wednesday, when Fresno State visits for a 6:30 p.m. tip-off at the DMC.
