
Lady Frogs win overtime thriller against UNLV

FORT WORTH, Texas -- Ashley Davis scored 19 points, including a pair of free-throws with 0.9 seconds left in regulation to tie the game, as TCU rallied from a 15-point first-half deficit for an 82-77 overtime victory over UNLV Saturday afternoon at the Daniel-Meyer Coliseum.The Lady Frogs, seeking their sixth consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament, took the court just 40 hours after Thursday's 63-62 win at No. 17 Utah.
TCU (17-10, 11-5) opens Mountain West Conference Championship play Wednesday in Denver. TCU will be seeded fourth and will play fifth-seeded Wyoming at 9:30 p.m. (CST). The two schools split the two meetings earlier this season.
Davis hit her game-tying free-throws in the final second of regulation play when she was summoned off the bench to replace an injured Natasha Lacy. With TCU trailing 70-68, Lacy was fouled after grabbing an offensive rebound and had to leave the game with an injury. Davis then sank both free-throws to force overtime.
Davis was 9-of-10 at the line in the game, including 4-of-4 in overtime. She finished Mountain West Conference play 41-of-43 from the charity stripe.
A junior from San Antonio, Davis added six rebounds, three steals and two assists.
A layup by Jenna Lohse just six seconds into overtime was the Lady Frogs' only bucket in the extra period. TCU was 10-of-12 at the free-throw line for its other scoring in overtime.
The Lady Frogs took the lead for good at 79-77 on a pair of Davis free-throws with 42 seconds remaining. Davis' final points of the game, two free-throws with 10 seconds left, provided the final margin and gave TCU its largest lead in the game.
TCU went 37-of-45 (82.2 percent) at the line as it won despite shooting just 33.9 percent from the field. The 37 made free throws tied the school record. After hitting 55.2 percent of its first-half field-goal attempts, UNLV went just 12-of-35 (34.3 percent) the remainder of the contest.
Led by Lacy's eight boards, TCU held a 49-37 rebounding edge that included a 24-14 margin on the offensive end. Lacy added 14 points and six assists.
TCU took its first lead of the game at 60-59 on a 3-pointer from the corner by Davis with 5:49 to play in regulation.
Davis was fouled with 2:11 left and hit a pair of free-throws to give the Lady Frogs a 66-64 advantage.
A driving layup by Adrianne Ross with 1:21 to play put TCU on top 68-66. Ross finished with 17 points, six assists, four rebounds and three steals. She was also 9-of-10 at the free-throw line.
UNLV's Sherry McCracklin tied the game on a layup with 1:03 to play and gave the Rebels a 70-68 lead with two free-throws with 11.3 seconds left.
The Rebels (17-10, 9-7) scored the game's opening four points and led by as many as 15, 40-25, before TCU scored the final eight points of the first half to trim its deficit to 40-33 at the intermission. Ross and Lacy both had four points in the Lady Frogs' 8-0 spurt over the final 3:04.
Following the game, TCU seniors Vanessa Clementino and Stephanie Thiel were honored as they made the final home appearance of their Lady Frog careers.
After opening the 2005-06 campaign with a 2-5 record, TCU went 15-5 over its final 20 regular-season contests. The Lady Frogs faced 10 nationally-ranked opponents.
The Lady Frogs opened and closed the regular season with overtime wins. TCU's only other contest to go to an extra period was a 71-68 victory over Long Beach State in the Nov. 18 season opener.
