Cowboys rally past Frogs in MWC opener

FORT WORTH, Texas -- Daaron Brown had 19 points and 11 rebounds, including a pair of free-throws with 3.2 seconds to play to seal the game, as Wyoming rallied from a nine-point deficit in the final 6:14 for a 68-64 victory over TCU Saturday night at the Daniel-Meyer Coliseum in Fort Worth, Texas, spoiling the Horned Frogs' Mountain West Conference debut.Chudi Chinweze scored a season-high 17 points, including 15 in the second half, to lead TCU. It was his top scoring game since an 18-point effort at Houston on Jan. 13, 2004. He added seven rebounds and a career-high five blocked shots.
Nile Murry totaled 15 points for TCU, while Brent Hackett had 12 points, six assists and five rebounds.
With the game tied at 44-44 with 8:54 to play, a Chinweze jumper and layup began a 15-6 spurt, capped by a Blake Adams 3-pointer, to put the Frogs on top 59-50 with 6:14 left.
Behind Brad Jones' seven points and six from Brown, the Cowboys then outscored the Frogs 18-5 the remainder of the contest.
A Murry 3-pointer with 1:33 to play trimmed the Frogs' deficit to 65-64. TCU then forced a Wyoming shot-clock violation.
On the Frogs' ensuing possession, the Cowboys' Kevin Lewis blocked a Murry jumper with 19 seconds remaining.
Jones was fouled and hit 1-of-2 free-throws to extend the Cowboys' lead to 66-64 with 10 seconds left.
Hackett was fouled with four seconds to play. He missed the first free-throw. After intentionally missing his second attempt, Brown grabbed the rebound and was fouled. He then hit two free-throws with 3.2 seconds remaining to provide the final margin.
TCU trailed 12-6 early before going on a 12-0 run over a 4:11 stretch to take an 18-12 lead on a pair of Judson Stubbs free-throws with 6:21 to play in the first half. Stubbs keyed the spurt with five of his nine points in the game.
The Frogs built their first-half lead to as many as nine points, 25-16, on an Art Pierce free-throw with 1:40 remaining.
Chinweze scored eight straight TCU points over a 2:41 stretch of the second half as the Frogs took a 38-34 lead with 13:18 remaining.
The Frogs led 25-21 at the intermission. The 21 points and 20.6 field-goal percentage (7-of-34) by Wyoming were both season-lows in a first half by a TCU opponent.
Wyoming (8-7, 1-1) shot 60.0 percent (15-of-25) in the second half to finish the game at 37.3. TCU shot 34.5 percent on the night. The Cowboys held a 46-37 rebounding edge.
TCU (4-11, 0-1) committed a season-low 11 turnovers.
The Horned Frogs hit the road for their next two games, beginning Wednesday with a nationally-televised contest (ESPN2) at New Mexico. Tip-off is 10 p.m. Central. TCU's next home date is Jan. 18 versus San Diego State.
