RIVIERA MAYA, QUINTANA ROO, Mexico -- Four Lady Frogs scored in double figures Friday at the Caribbean Classic in Riviera Maya, Quintana Roo, Mexico, to lead the TCU women's basketball team past Mississippi State by a 72-52 score.
It was all Mississippi State (1-2) during the first 11 minutes of the game, as the Lady Bulldogs took a 10-point lead, 21-11, with 8:53 to go after a three by Sarah Johnson. TCU (2-1) responded by holding Mississippi State scoreless the remainder of the period and scored 18 points to take a 29-21 advantage. MSU went 0-for-7 during the stretch and committed six turnovers.
TCU's Vanessa Clementino drained a jumper eight seconds into the second period to extend the Lady Frogs' run to 20-0 before Johnson stopped the MSU drought with a free throw at the 19:22 mark. Mississippi State got a jumper to fall with 17:18 left thanks to Lauren Roberts to end a span of 11:35 with no field goals.
The Lady Bulldogs managed to close the disparity to as little as seven during the second half at 37-30 with 15:51 showing on the scoreboard when Natasha Henderson hit a shot in the lane. TCU, however, continued to pour on its pressure defense and forced Mississippi State into more mistakes.
Turnovers were the key difference in the game, with MSU committing 28. The Lady Frogs took advantage by scoring 27 points off the Lady Bulldogs' miscues. Mississippi State had just six points off TCU's 15 turnovers.
TCU shot 45.5 percent (30-of-66) for the game and made 53.3 percent (16-of-30) in the second half. MSU was 19-of-50 (.380) and 9-for-26 (.346) in the second stanza. Both teams struggled from the free-throw line, as the Lady Frogs were 9-of-22 (.409) and the Lady Bulldogs 12-of-23 (.522).
Natasha Lacy led TCU in scoring with 17 points while adding a team-best eight rebounds and five assists. Adrianne Ross chipped in with 15 points and five assists, and Clementino tallied 14 points and six boards. Ashley Davis was the Lady Frogs' other double digit scorer with 12.
Robin Porter and Roberts each had 14 points to lead all Lady Bulldog scorers. Roberts also had a team-high eight rebounds, as did Mamie McKinney.
Play continues in the Caribbean Classic on Saturday with TCU taking on No. 7/8-ranked North Carolina at 4:10 p.m. CST. The Tar Heels were 79-72 winners over No. 16/14 Arizona State on Friday.
