RIVIERA MAYA, QUINTANA ROO, Mexico -- The No. 7/8-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels were too much for the TCU Lady Frogs, winning 77-54 Saturday in Riviera Maya, Quintana Roo, Mexico. It was the second of two games in the Caribbean Classic for both teams.
TCU (2-2) led for the first five minutes until Camille Little hit a three-pointer to make the score 6-5. It began what would be a 14-0 run for North Carolina (4-0) over a span of 2:34. The Tar Heels were up by as many as 20 at one point in the first half before the Lady Frogs trimmed it down to 14 at 30-16 with 4:32 to play. UNC's Rashanda McCants hit a three right before time expired to put her squad back up 39-20 at the intermission.
The Tar Heels continued to use their size and athleticism in the second period and took their largest lead of the game with 1:51 to play when Heather Claytor drilled a trey to make the score 77-49. TCU's Natasha Lacy and Lorie-Butler Rayford were able to score a couple of baskets inside and Moneka Knight added a free throw before time expired.
North Carolina out-rebounded TCU 41-25 and shot 53.7 percent (29-of-54) for the game. The Lady Frogs made just 39.6 percent (21-of-53) of their shots, although, they were 14-for-28 (.500) in the second half. UNC also connected on 11-of-19 (.579) threes, while TCU was 4-for-15 (.267).
Ashley Davis led TCU in scoring with 14 points. Butler-Rayford fell one-point short of a double-double, grabbing 10 rebounds on the evening. Adrianne Ross added seven points and six assists.
Ivory Latta was the top scorer for North Carolina with 18 points and five assists. Erlana Larkins tossed in 14 points, nine rebounds and four assists, while McCants had 13 points. Camille Little had a dozen points, five boards and four assists.
Next up for the Lady Frogs is the No. 22/23-ranked Oklahoma Sooners on Wednesday at 7 p.m. CST in Norman, Okla.
