PROVO, Utah - The No. 6 BYU Cougars proved to be a tough chore to handle as they handed the Frogs a 4-0 loss in Mountain West play on Saturday night. Jamie Beck scored twice for the Cougars and the Cougar defense held the Frogs to seven shots in the match. Buchanan did all she could in goal, stopping eight shots.

The Frogs had a chance to draw first blood in the contest when they drew a foul deep in their offensive zone. K.D. Waters took the direct kick from about 20 yards out. Her low shot was blocked away from by a defender and out of danger.

The Cougars earned the same chance minutes later and capitalized. The Frogs were whistled for a foul. Natalie Nate took the direct kick from 25 yards out, fed the ball to Jamie Beck, who drilled it over the head of Katy Buchanan for the 1-0 lead just over nine minutes into the contest.

BYU kept the pressure on, piling up 11 shots in the period. They were allowed five corners in the half, but strong defense from the Frogs limited the Cougar chances off the corner kicks. Despite allowing the early goal, Buchanan settled into the match and made five outstanding saves to keep the Frogs in the match.

Coming out in the second half, the Frogs put forth a valiant effort trying to get the ball deep in their offensive zone. They pushed it deep, but smothering defense from the Cougars prevented the Frogs from firing off a shot.

An unlucky misplay off the foot of Caroline Starns led to a goalkick for the Cougars. They set up the play perfectly pushing the ball downfield. Caroline Swanson fed the ball to the right corner to Katie Larkin, who fed the ball to a waiting Charlene Lui. She shot the ball high and over Buchanan's head for the 2-0 BYU lead.

The scoring opportunities for the Cougars kept piling up and again, they were able to capitalize in the 61st minute. On a throw in, Brook Thulin flipped the ball across the box to Beck, who tapped it in for her second goal of the match for a 3-0 lead. With 13 minutes remaining in the contest, the Cougars tacked on another goal, this one off the foot of Annie Zwahlen.

Starns had the best chance for the Frogs in the second half. She battled with her defender and worked her way clear for a wide open shot about 25 yards out from the goal. Her point-blank shot was corralled by back-up goalkeeper Ashley Smith. A Moran Lavi header with three minutes to go was stopped to keep the Frogs scoreless.

The Frogs will return home for their final two home games of the 2005 season when they play host to UNLV and San Diego State. Friday's match against Dan Abdalla's former squad, UNLV is slated for a 4:00 p.m. start at Garvey-Rosenthal.
