FORT WORTH, Texas - The TCU women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 match to league-leading UNLV Friday afternoon at Garvey-Rosenthal.
The Frogs surrendered an early goal and the Rebels held on for the victory.
The Rebels played a fast, physical match with the Frogs and their tenacity paid off as they were awarded eight corner kicks in the first half. One of those corners paid dividends in taking an early 1-0 lead.
UNLV sent the ball deep and rattled off three straight shots in the eighth minute. The third shot ricocheted off TCU goalkeeper Katy Buchanan, giving the Rebels their second corner kick of the half. Katie Carney took the kick and placed it perfectly to Lisa Sternberg, who headed the ball over the outreached hands of Buchanan.
The Frogs took six shots in the half, but only one of them made its way on goal and Rebel goalkeeper Jenna Huff was there to make the stop on Bjarnveig Birgisdottir's shot. At the half, UNLV held a 12-6 advantage in shots.
The second half played out much the same as the first. The Rebels controlled the pace of the game but the Frogs defense held strong, shutting them out in the second half. The Rebels were forced to take off-angle shots, limiting Buchanan's shots faced to just three.
Late in the game with the Frogs pushing for the tying goal, TCU's Anne Monaghan caught Huff off guard. The Frogs pushed the ball deep and Monaghan found herself with some space about 22 yards out. She turned and blasted a shot to goal and Huff watched it go over her head and clang off the crossbar out of danger.
The Frogs (5-7-0, 0-3-0) will honor four seniors on Sunday as they play their final home match of the 2005 season. San Diego State will make their first trip to Fort Worth for a 1 p.m. match at Garvey-Rosenthal.
