FORT WORTH, Texas--The TCU Lady Frogs (12-3, 2-0 C-USA) dominated the Houston Lady Cougars en route to a 78-53 victory on Sunday afternoon in front of 3,646 fans and a national television audience. TCU had a well-balanced scoring attack, with seven players registering at least eight points.
The Lady Cougars (9-5, 0-2) stayed in the contest for the opening 10 minutes, but surrendered their final lead of the game with 9:21 remaining on an Ashley Browning three-pointer. The freshman keyed the Frogs' first half uprising, connecting on her first four three-point attempts as TCU built a double-figure lead (40-27) by halftime.
"It was obviously a big win for us," head coach Jeff Mittie said. "It's always great to win against a tough conference opponent, and to do so on national television makes it even that much better. I am really proud of our kids."
In the process of defeating the Cougars, TCU set season highs for steals in a game (21) and three-pointers made (11). On the afternoon, the Frogs shot nearly 50 percent from beyond the arc (11-of-24).
Sandora Irvin, who was 2-for-2 from three-point range, finished with team highs in points (14) and rebounds (8). The freshman also swatted three shots to establish a new school single-season blocked shot record (42). It took her just 15 games to accomplish the feat.
Joining Irvin in double figures were Ashley Browning (12) and Kati Safaritova (10). TCU had 27 points off 24 Houston turnovers.
Today's contest was the Frogs' first-ever appearance on national television (ESPN2). TCU remains at home for a pair of Conference USA games next weekend, as the Lady Frogs face Cincinnati on Fri., Jan. 18 at 7:00 p.m. and Louisville on Sun., Jan. 20 at 1:00 p.m.
