FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) - Bingo Merriex scored six of his 16 points in the final five minutes Friday night, including a shot with 1:19 left that put TCU ahead, and the Horned Frogs held on for a 91-85 victory over Texas-San Antonio.
Jamal Brown hit four free throws in the final 32 seconds to preserve the win for TCU (7-3).
Corey Valsin led TCU with 20 points and 9 rebounds. He hit nine of 16 from the field and also had four assists. Merriex had nine rebounds and four assists as well.
"Corey had a nice night," said head coach Billy Tubbs. He got us back in the game by going on a spurt in the first half where we were getting nothing to fall. I thought he did a nice job defensively against (Devin) Brown."
Corey Santee scored 13 points for TCU, Marlon Dumont added 12.
Devin Brown paced UTSA (5-2) with 22 points, 11 rebounds and 6 assists before fouling out. McEverett Powers added 18 for the Roadrunners, hitting 10-of-16 from the free throw line. Powers also had four blocks.
Both teams struggled from the field in the first half, especially from the 3-point line. TCU was 1-for-9, while UTSA made just three of 13.
The Frogs outrebounded UTSA by 10 boards, 54-44. The 54 rebounds are a season-high for the Frogs, eclipsing the 50 boards the Frogs pulled down against Arkansas-Monticello. In the second half, TCU outrebounded UTSA, 27-18.
TCU will return to action on Tuesday, December 18, when they host crosstown rival SMU at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum.
