NORMAN, Okla. - The TCU Lady Frogs suffered their second consecutive road loss to a 2001 NCAA Tournament team as the Frogs dropped a 76-60 decision to the third-ranked Oklahoma Sooners in Norman, Okla., on Tuesday night. The Frogs are now 2-2 on the season, while Oklahoma remained undefeated at 6-0.
The game was low scoring at the outset, as the teams combined for just 19 points in the first seven minutes. TCU led the game 10-9 at that point, but it was the Frogs' final lead of the night. Oklahoma's tandem of LaNeishea Caufield and Stacey Dales took over offensively, scoring 24 and 21 points respectively.
Oklahoma took a 41-29 lead into intermission as the Frogs hit just 33.3 percent from the field and 43.8 percent from the free throw line in the first half.
The Frogs were never able to cut into the 12-point halftime deficit, and trailed by as many as 20 on two occasions. The Lady Frogs allowed a season-high 76 points in the contest and were held to a season-low 60 points. TCU also committed 32 turnovers, the most by the Frogs in the last two years.
"We have a young team and we're struggling offensively," head coach Jeff Mittie said. "And right now, we're letting the offensive end of the floor affect the defensive end. We need to execute better. We made a few runs, but we just didn't take care of the ball. It's tough to make long runs when you turn it over so many times."
Grace Gantt led the team with 14 points, while Ebony Shaw added 10. TCU's top scorers heading into the game, Sandora Irvin (17.3 ppg) and Kati Safaritova (14.0 ppg), combined for just eight points in the contest. Shaw narrowly missed her first career double-double with a team-high nine rebounds.
TCU begins a nine-game homestand this weekend, when the team hosts the Cook Children's TCU Hoops Classic. On Friday, the Frogs play Prairie View A&M at 7:00 p.m. and San Diego State on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. Prairie View and San Diego State face off on Saturday at 7:00 p.m.
