Senior Jayden Pierre scores 18, Frogs win for eighth time in nine games
FORT WORTH – Led by its most prominent senior on senior day, TCU earned its eighth win over the last nine games in a 73-63 victory over Cincinnati on Saturday.
Jayden Pierre scored a team-high 18 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field. The senior guard also added five assists and five rebounds. He along with seniors Vianney Salatchoum and Trey Stuart were recognized on the court before the game for their last time in Schollmaier Arena.
The Horned Frogs (21-10, 11-7) forced the Bearcats (17-14, 9-9) into 19 turnovers. It was the most by a TCU opponent in Big 12 play this season. TCU had a season-low six turnovers, including just one in the second half.
Seven of the first 10 UC possessions of the second half resulted in a turnover, which helped push the TCU lead to double digits for the first time. A layup by Tanner Toolson gave the Frogs a 45-35 lead with 14:13 remaining. The Bearcats never got closer than six points as the Frogs pushed their lead to 12 on five different occasions until the final buzzer sounded.
David Punch set the tone early with two plays where him diving on the floor resulted in a score for TCU. The forward tied a career high in assists with seven and added 13 points. Liutauras Lelevicius came off the bench to score 14 points, which included two 3-pointers.
For the first time in nine games, TCU was beaten on the boards. UC had the rebounding edge, 37-30, and made 13-of-31 from 3-point range. TCU was 15-of-21 from the free throw line compared to 4-of-6 from Cincinnati.
With the win, TCU secured the No. 6 seed in the Phillips 66 Big 12 Tournament. The Horned Frogs will begin play on Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. on either ESPN2 or ESPNU against the winner of Tuesday's matchup between No. 11 Colorado and No. 14 Oklahoma State.
