Horned Frogs shut out 4-0 in Tucson, host No. 12 UCF on Friday
TUCSON, Ariz. – No. 2 TCU saw its five-match winning streak snapped in a 4-0 defeat at the hands of No. 15 Arizona on Sunday at the Lanelle Robson Tennis Center.
It was the Horned Frogs' first shutout loss in nearly two years. TCU (13-5, 2-1 Big 12) played without its No. 1 singles and doubles player in Cosme Rolland De Ravel, who was sidelined due to injury. The match was the Frogs' ninth road or neutral site affair in their last 10 outings, all of which have come opposite top-25 teams, dating back to February's ITA Indoor National Championships.
TCU claimed only three sets all dual. Albert Pedrico and Cooper Woestendick struck first in doubles with a 6-4 victory in court two, but the Horned Frogs failed to convert break point opportunities on the top and bottom. Down 1-0, Arizona (16-3, 4-0 Big 12) swept courts three through five in singles. TCU lost five opening sets.
"Not a good result," said head coach David Roditi. "Arizona was too good. We knew it was going to be a really tough match. Very good team, and here in Tucson, not the easiest place to play at, and they were just too good for us. We missed opportunities, many opportunities in the doubles point, and got down five first sets, and on the road against good teams, it's hard to overcome that. Our guys fought and got some of those sets back, and the one first set we won, we lost the match anyway. So just an overall bad day, and credit to Arizona. Now, we get to go home finally and get to play UCF at home on Friday. Hope you're out there cheering for the guys. Go Frogs."
With its prolonged stretch away from home finally in the rearview mirror, TCU commences a four-match homestand at 5:30 p.m. on Friday vs. No. 12 UCF.
