Horned Frogs defeated in competitive battle
FORT WORTH – In a highly-anticipated showdown after enduring multiple schedule changes due to the winter storm that hit Texas, the TCU women's tennis team suffered a loss to Arizona State, 4-2, on Monday afternoon at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.
The home debut for TCU came at an earlier than expected time, as the Frogs were originally supposed to play against Arizona State in College Station for ITA Kickoff Weekend. TCU was competitive throughout with the Sun Devils, but at the end of the day was unable to create enough momentum to sway the ledger in their favor.
The new-look Frogs featured three new players who made their dual match debut today. Jennifer Jackson, Cristina Ramos Sierra and Victoria Gomez O'Hayon were the newcomers who played in both singles and doubles for TCU.
DOUBLES RUNDOWN
TCU was unable to complete comebacks on two courts as Arizona State took the doubles point over the Frogs.
Despite being down 2-3 to start, Tomi Main and Jackson were able to fight back against Sara Svetac and Sarang Lim for a 6-4 victory to open doubles play. This gives the duo a 3-0 record overall with all three wins coming in the past week and a half.
After falling to a 1-4 deficit, the 56th-ranked duo of Ramos Sierra and Raquel Caballero Chica fell to Karsyn Evans and Lily Taylor 6-3 to have the doubles point come down to court one.
With doubles on the line, Yu-Chin Tsai and Gomez O'Hayon were unable to battle back against Emilija Tverijonaite and Vivian Ovrootsky, as Arizona State took a 1-0 lead heading into singles play.
DOUBLE RESULTS
Order of Finish: 3, 2, 1
SINGLES RUNDOWN
Despite falling behind 3-0 in singles, TCU showed resilience and toughness for some bright spots in the loss. Arizona State picked up two quick wins on courts three and one, as the two ranked players for the Sun Devils bested Caballero Chica and Jackson to put Arizona State one point away from clinching.
The grit began to show after this point, as Cristina Ramos Sierra was able to win a second set tiebreaker to defeat Evans, 6-1, 7-6(3) and give TCU a point on the scoreboard to move the ledger to 3-1.
Tsai eventually settled down after the first set went to a tiebreaker, where she was able to squeak by with a 8-6 triumph heading into the second set. The senior would then secure a bagel against Taylor, 6-0, giving the Frogs hope within the match.
Gomez O'Hayon managed to fight back after dropping the first set, bringing court two to a winner-take-all third set. However, the newcomer was unable to get the job done, as Arizona State was able to secure the court and win the match.
Cayetana Gay rolled to a 6-1 win in the first set before she was unable to start the second set due to the match being clinched.
SINGLES RESULTS
Order of Finish: 3, 1, 5, 4, 2
