Ninth-ranked TCU notches longest single-season home winning streak in program history
FORT WORTH – No. 9 TCU engaged Texas Teach averaging 84.5 points and nearly 11 three-pointers per game in Schollmaier Arena.
But on Saturday, it was the Horned Frogs' prowess at the other end of the court that carried the team to a record-setting 16th consecutive home victory.
TCU put the bite on the Lady Raiders in a 63-42 win before an announced crowd of 5,748 fans. The Frogs held Texas Tech to just 16 points in the second half and outscored its longtime rival by 20 over the third and fourth periods. Texas Tech's 42 points were its fewest in a game all season, one fewer than the 43 it mustered in a 27-point defeat at TCU's hands on Jan. 11 in Lubbock.
The Horned Frogs (22-3, 10-2 Big 12) joined a three-way tie for first place in the Big 12 standings alongside No. 12 Kansas State and Baylor. TCU also set a program record for the longest single-season home winning streak with the result, surpassing the 2008-09 squad's undefeated 15-0 record inside Daniel Meyer Coliseum.
TCU led wire-to-wire even while enduring uncharacteristic offensive struggles. The Horned Frogs shot 41 percent (22-54) from the field – their lowest clip in a home game this season – and 9-32 from deep. Hailey Van Lith, Sedona Prince and Madison Conner combined for only 28 points, the fewest in a game all season by the trio of Naismith Starting 5 Award finalists.
But the Frogs were buoyed by a collective effort.
Aaliyah Roberson netted a season-high 14 points on the strength of a 4-4 mark from downtown.
Conner finished with 13 points – 11 of which came in the second half – while Prince and Taylor Bigby pitched in nine apiece.
Donovyn Hunter dished out a game and season-high seven assists in 26 minutes off the bench.
Even if shots failed to fall, TCU remained its usual efficient self. The Horned Frogs dished out 19 assists on 22 made field goals, good for their highest assist rate of the season (86 percent).
TCU raced out to a 10-2 lead and took a 15-9 edge into the second period. Bigby scored six of her points in the opening frame. The Horned Frogs started the game 5-15 from the floor but held Texas Tech (14-12, 3-10 Big 12) to just two buckets.
A 7-0 run fueled by four points from Prince and Roberson's second three of the night staked TCU to its first double digit lead at 24-14 with 5:31 remaining before the intermission.
TCU, though, went the remainder of the half without a field goal, allowing the Lady Raiders to close within a single point, 27-26, at the horn. The Frogs entered the locker room 8-25 from the field and 2-14 behind the arc.
The field goal drought extended to more than eight-and-a-half minutes once play resumed. Conner finally snapped the spell with a midrange jumper at the 7:58 mark of the third that pushed TCU in front 29-27 and broke the game's lone tie.
TCU capped the third on an 8-2 run via a 3-pointer from Van Lith and five unanswered by Roberson to close the quarter.
The Horned Frogs converted 4-7 attempts from distance in the final frame, including back-to-back from Conner to close the game.
TCU held Texas Tech to single digits in points scored in the first, third and fourth quarters.
Conner finished 5-6 from the field and 3-4 from deep.
Prince padded her final stat line with 10 rebounds and three blocks, leading all players in both categories.
