
Red-Hot First Half Lifts No. 8 TCU Past Richmond 68-52

CANCUN, Mexico – A first half surge carried No. 8 TCU to a comfortable 68-52 victory over Richmond on Thursday to begin the Cancun Challenge.
The Horned Frogs raced out to a 49-23 halftime lead and maintained a double-digit advantage for more than 30 minutes of the ballgame.
Marta Suarez single-handedly outscored Richmond in the first half.
Suarez tallied all of her game-high 24 points over the first two periods. The reigning Big 12 Player of the Week, Suarez hit her first nine shots from the field, including six from behind the arc.
Olivia Miles led the Frogs from bell to bell with 19 points, eight rebounds and six assists.
Donovyn Hunter pitched in 12 points to give TCU three double digit scorers while Clara Silva finished with eight points and matched Miles for the game high on the glass.
TCU improved to 7-0 on the year while Richmond, the defending Atlantic 10 champions, dropped to 5-2. The Horned Frogs earned their second win over a team that reached the round of 32 of the 2025 NCAA Tournament.
The first half might as well have been an offensive blitzkrieg.
TCU began the game 15-25 from the floor and 6-8 behind the arc and had the Spiders doubled up at 42-21 with 2:52 to go. Suarez's sixth 3-pointer stretched the lead to 24 points before Miles scored four straight to put the Frogs ahead by 26.
Suarez poured in 12 points in the opening period to stake TCU to an early 24-15 edge. She had five 3-pointers to her name before the second media timeout arrived. At that point, TCU led 35-19. Miles accounted for seven of the Frogs' final 13 points in the half.
TCU outscored the Spiders 25-8 in the second quarter.
Richmond cut TCU's lead down to 63-50 with 5:04 remaining, prompting head coach Mark Campbell to whistle for time.
Hunter promptly drilled a 3-pointer – her second of the half – from the right baseline. TCU did not allow a field goal the rest of the way following the timeout.
The Spiders held TCU to a season-low 19 second half points. The Horned Frogs shot just 29 percent (8-28) out of the locker room.
Clara Bielefeld was a sparkplug in the third quarter. The freshman scored five points and added a block in the frame. Bielefeld, from Recklinghausen, Germany, logged 12 minutes in the second half.
TCU held Richmond to season lows in points, assists (11) and 3-pointers (six). The Spiders entered the contests averaging 74.4 points and 10.6 threes per night.
Richmond was led by 23 points and seven rebounds from Maggie Doogan.
