No. 10 TCU wins 28th straight at home, hammers Tarleton State 80-32
FORT WORTH – No. 10 TCU shut down Tarleton State 80-32 and broke the TCU basketball record for consecutive home victories on Thursday, as the Horned Frogs notched their 28th straight win at Schollmaier Arena.
The streak began on Feb. 24, 2024 at the tail-end of head coach Mark Campbell's inaugural season and with TCU down to just seven healthy scholarship players due to injuries. The Horned Frogs then ran the table at home in 2024-25, finishing 21-0 on their way to an undisputed Big 12 championship and NCAA Elite Eight. This season's squad won its first four home games by an average of 53 points to shatter a record that stood untouched for 15 years.
With the victory, TCU (5-0) is also tied with Norfolk State for the longest active home winning streak in all of Division I.
And on a night TCU scored 80 points – it 31st time doing so in the Campbell era – it was the Horned Frogs' prowess at the other end of the floor that led the way. TCU held Tarleton State (2-3) to 15 percent shooting (9-58) from the field and an 11 percent clip (2-18) behind the arc. The Texans final points and field goal tallies were their lowest ever in a 'D1 vs. D1' game as were their shooting percentages.
The defensive effort was good for the third-lowest opponent field goal percentage is the third-lowest opposing field goal percentage in program history. TCU last kept its opponent below 20 percent from the field in 2016.
Tarleton did not record a field goal for nearly 12 minutes to begin the ballgame. By that time, TCU had already opened up a 19-5 lead. TCU separated from the Texans with a 15-0 run over the course of the first quarter.
The Horned Frogs outscored the Texans 46-14 in the second half.
Five of Tarleton's nine buckets came in the second quarter. The Texans shot just nine percent (4-42) in the first, third and fourth frames vs. the Frogs' defense.
TCU had five players score in double figures for the fifth time in as many games.
Marta Suarez powered home her first double-double as a Horned Frog. Suarez led all players with 20 points and 10 rebounds. She netted 15 of her points in the second half.
Olivia Miles, whom TCU honored with a SLAMU promotion celebrate her cover feature in the magazine, delivered another textbook performance. The national player of the year candidate filled it up with 18 points, a game-high seven assists, five rebounds and four steals.
Miles has now posted a 15-5-5 game in three straight games and four of five overall thus far.
Taylor Bigby matched Miles with 18 points – one shy of her TCU career high – over 23 minutes off the bench. She went 4-7 from deep.
Donovyn Hunter chipped in 10 points to give TCU its quartet.
Eleven of the 12 Horned Frogs who dressed checked into the ballgame. Only two players – Miles and Suarez – logged more than 30 minutes.
TCU seldom surrendered an easy look despite playing almost the entire second half without its two centers, both of whom fouled out in the third quarter. The stretch forward Suarez slotted in at the five. TCU still managed to finish with a 49-40 advantage on the glass.
The Horned Frogs dished out 23 assists against 13 turnovers.
Maddie Scherr finished with five dimes while Suarez had four.
