WACO, Texas – TCU fought off a game Baylor squad and hostile home crowd inside the Hawkins Indoor Tennis Center, ultimately emerging with a 4-1 nonconference win over the Bears on Monday night.
The second-ranked Horned Frogs (3-0) claimed a tightly contested doubles point that was decided on a marathon tiebreaker on court three. Duncan Chan and Albert Pedrico Kravtsov staved off four match points vs. Louis Bowden and Alexandru Chirita, ultimately prevailing 11-9 to send TCU to a 1-0 lead.
TCU locked up the result with singles wins at one, four and five. The Frogs were up a break on courts two and three when play was halted.
"The Frogs got it done," said head coach David Roditi. "The doubles point was one of the closest doubles points I have seen. We were down a break right away, but the guys did a great job of coming back, winning the doubles point. We've got to continue to tweak a few things and improve, it is only the third match of the year, and I'm sure Baylor feels the same way. I am really proud of the guys to get a road win at a place like Baylor. Now, we have ITA Kickoff Weekend at home, it is going to be a tough match on Saturday, hopefully we get to play Sunday [in the championship match] as well. We get four days to clean some things up and get better and hopefully do better this weekend. But I am proud of the guys. Go Frogs!"
Chan and Pedrico defeated their doubles foes in singles as well, positioning TCU within a point of the clinch. Pedrico cruised past Chirita, 6-2, 6-2, in the fifth position and widened the Frogs' lead to 2-1. Baylor got on the board with a victory at six, but Chan countered with a 7-6 (2), 6-4 defeat of Bowden on court four.
Jack Pinnington earned his second match-clincher in as many outings, rallying from a set down and past 25th-ranked Devin Badenhorst, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.
TCU improved to 36-5 on indoor courts since 2018 and 24-1 over the last three seasons.
The Horned Frogs extended their winning streak vs. Baylor to seven matches dating back to February of 2023. The regional rivals rematch on April 13 in Fort Worth to conclude Big 12 play.
Doubles Rundown
TCU immediately found itself behind a break in all three matches and later down a court, as Badenhorst and Luc Koenig knocked off Pinnington and freshman Cooper Woestendick, 7-5, on court two
The No. 2-ranked pair of Lui Maxted and Pedro Vives got the Frogs on the right track. Maxted and Vives, the reigning NCAA doubles champions, won four straight games to close out No. 3 Oskar Brostrom Poulsen and Marko Miladinoivc, 6-4.
Maxted and Vives avenged a defeat to the Baylor pair in the quarterfinals of the ITA All-American Championships. The victory signified the duo's eighth ranked win dating back to the fall. Vives is a perfect 8-0 vs. ranked players this season as he begins his final semester of college tennis.
Chan and Pedrico broke back to level their match at 3-3. The match remained on the business side until knotted at six games all.
TCU has won the doubles point in 22 of its last 25 indoor duals.
Singles Rundown
Chan and Pedrico improved to 3-0 in singles play in duals with their respective victories.
The results gave TCU a crucial cushion. Baylor claimed the opening set on three courts.
Filip Apltauer fell to Marko Miladinovic on court six, 6-4, 6-3, in a match that halved the Frogs' lead and proved to be the Bears' lone point.
Pinnington and Maxted both evened their matches at one set apiece with comfortable wins in the second frame, creating a wider pathway to the clinch.
Maxted, the ITA No. 12 singles player, fell behind 4-0 to Koenig on court three in the first set but rallied to win his next four games. The set saw a tiebreaker, which Maxted led 5-4 with two service points in his pocket. He ultimately dropped the tiebreaker 6-8, but the first set rally turned the match on its ear. The senior took set two 6-1 and led the decisive set 4-2 at the time of the clinch.
Vives, currently ninth in the ITA singles rankings, led 58th-ranked Brostrom Poulsen, 6-4, 6-7 (4), 2-0.
