PROVO, Utah – TCU shattered its single-season record for 3-pointers on its way to a 68-58 triumph over BYU on Wednesday at the Marriott Center.
Needing 11 to top the Horned Frog history books, TCU connected on a season-high 14-29 attempts behind the arc.
The 3-point surge swelled the Horned Frogs (17-9, 4-11 Big 12) season tally to 257.
It only took 26 games for the Horned Frogs to surpass the 253 three-pointers knocked down by the 2017-18 TCU squad. For reference, that group played 36 games on its way to reaching the program's first-ever WNIT semifinals.
Aaliyah Roberson and Agnes Emma-Nnopu drained four 3-pointers apiece.
Roberson tallied a game-leading 23 points and 13 rebounds, both of which were career-highs. The double-double was the sophomore's fourth in 2023-24.
Emma-Nnopu came one rebound shy of joining Roberson on the double-double train, finishing with 17 points and nine boards. She collected 11 of her points in the first half to lead all players.
The Horned Frogs led for the entirety of the second half and by as many as 17 points in the third quarter. TCU outscored BYU 21-6 over the first eight minutes out of the locker room to assume a 50-33 lead.
TCU converted 5-10 three-point attempts in the first period, tittering its single season record from the get-go. Emma-Nnopu and Harris each connected twice from distance as TCU and BYU (15-13, 5-10 Big 12) played to a 17-17 gridlock.
The Horned Frogs held BYU – second only to TCU among Big 12 teams in 3-point shooting – to one 3-pointer between the second and third quarters after allowing the Cougars to hit 3-5 over the first 10 minutes.
A 6-0 run aided by consecutive 3-pointers from Emma-Nnopu and Roberson staked TCU to a 29-27 halftime lead it never relinquished. TCU held the Cougars scoreless over the final 3:15 and to a 3-15 clip from the field.
Una Jovanovic (9 points, 5 assists) sparked a string of seven unanswered TCU points to begin the second half with a long ball on the Horned Frogs' first possession. Tara Manumaleuga then connected from long range and gave TCU its first double-digit lead of the night at 39-29 with 6:10 to go in the third.
Manumaleuga's triple put TCU within two 3-pointers of the record. She found Roberson wide open on the left key on the Horned Frogs ensuing possession, who promptly tied the mark. Emma-Nnopu drilled a second chance look for 3-pointer No. 254 with 3:10 remaining.
Five straight points from Roberson following Emma-Nnopu's record-setting three gave TCU its largest lead of the night.
BYU halved TCU's advantage to 53-45 with an 8-0 run midway through the final frame. The Horned Frogs countered with seven unanswered points of their own sparked by an and-one by Roberson and 3-pointer from Madison Conner.
Roberson delivered the dagger with TCU's 14th-and-final 3-pointer at the top of the arc with 1:22 to go to make the score 63-53.
TCU held BYU to its fewest points scored in a home game all season. The Horned Frogs also limited the Cougars to a 6-21 mark (29 percent) on 3-pointers – its worst in Provo this year.
The Horned Frogs finished with a 40-33 edge on the glass despite facing the Big 12's leading rebounder in Lauren Gustin, who averages 15.4 per game
Emma-Nnopu and Roberson neutralized Gustin, the reigning Big 12 Player of the Week and fresh off a career-high 33-point game, to 13 points on 6-15 shooting. Gustin entered halftime with just four points.
Jovanovic's five assists led all players.
