Chan, Maxted and Vives take aim at nation's biggest names
FORT WORTH – NCAA titles are on the line this week for TCU.
Duncan Chan, Lui Maxted and Pedro Vives are set to participate at the NCAA Individual Championships, beginning Tuesday at the Hurd Tennis Center in Waco.
All three players qualified for the 64-man singles draw. Maxted and Vives are also competing in doubles.
Maxted was awarded the No. 6 overall seed in singles. Vives also received seeded positioning in for singles and in doubles in tandem with Maxted.
Vives, No. 37 in the preseason ITA singles rankings, battles Georgia's 86th-ranked Oscar Pinto Sansano at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Maxted takes the court at 2:30 p.m. vs. Tiago Silva (Pacific). Chan closes out the opening round of singles with a 3:30 p.m. first serve opposite No. 55 Spencer Johnson of UCLA.
Doubles play commences on Wednesday. Maxted and Vives are one of 32 pairs comprising the bracket.
The NCAA Individual Championships are being held in the fall for the first time ever as a part of a two-year pilot program between the NCAA and ITA. Players qualified through four ITA invitationals from September-November.
Vives and Maxted punched their tickets in singles after reaching the quarterfinals of the ITA All-American Championships. Chan finished as a singles finalist at the ITA Central Sectional Championships on Nov. 9 in Fort Worth. Vives and Maxted reached the doubles final at Sectionals.
Chan and Maxted are making their NCAA Individual Championships debuts. Vives, one of two active seniors on the Horned Frogs' roster, reached the round of 16 in doubles at the 2023-24 NCAA Individual Championships in May. He received the No. 8 overall seed and earned automatic All-American status.

Scoring Format
All singles and doubles matches are scored as best-of-three tiebreak sets, with a 10-point tiebreaker in effect for doubles affairs tied at one set apiece.
TCU at the NCAA Individual Championships
TCU has qualified 19 singles competitors and 24 doubles teams for the NCAA Championships since 1977.
Eight Frogs have reached the NCAA Championships now in the last three seasons. The list includes All-Americans Juan Carlos Aguilar, Jake Fernley, Luc Fomba and Jack Pinnington and two-time ITA Indoor National Champion Sander Jong.
David Pate and Karl Richter won the 1981 NCAA doubles title. The triumph remains TCU's sole NCAA Individual Championship.
TCU has advanced at least one player to the second round of singles play for 10 consecutive seasons dating back to Cameron Norrie's quarterfinal run in 2015. Norrie became the first Frog to reach the semifinals the following season. Fellow three-time All-American Alex Rybakov became TCU's second and most recent singles semifinalist in 2019. Together, they are two of four players in program history to advance to the quarterfinals or farther. Esteban Carril (1999) and Tracie Fielding (2001) also accomplished the feat.
In doubles, TCU has sent 10 pairings to the final eight and four to the semifinals. The Horned Frogs' most recent final four appearance came via Jerry Lopez and Reese Stalder in 2017.
Last season, Fearnley and Pinnington won two singles matches apiece to reach the round of 16. Both players began their individual runs less than 24 hours after leading TCU to its first NCAA team championship in a 4-3 win over Texas on May 18 in Stillwater, Okla.
Pedro Vives: Path to the NCAA Championships
The Spaniard faced as tough a draw as any competitor at the ITA All-American Championships and delivered one of the most impressive showings. The lowest-ranked player he defeated was No. 28 Ryan Colby of Georgia in the round of 32. Vives bettered three preseason top-15 opponents, including No. 2 Michael Zheng (Columbia), 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 in the quarterfinals. Vives walloped Cornell's No. 6 Papoe, 6-1, 6-0, in the opening round and reserved his spot in Waco behind a round of 16 straight set takedown of No. 15 Jay Friend (Arizona), 6-1, 6-4.
Vives holds a career fall doubles record of 24-12 and is TCU's active career leader in combined overall victories with 135. Of his wins, 77 are in doubles.
He reached the singles quarterfinals and doubles semifinals of last season's ITA National Fall Championships, formerly the grand finale of fall tennis.
Vives is making his first appearance in singles at the NCAA Individual Championships.
Lui Maxted: Path to the NCAA Championships
Maxted, who began the season ranked 39th, largely earned his No. 6 seed on the strength of a standout September. He kicked off the fall season by posting a runner-up finish at the prestigious Battle in the Bay Classic, defeating Friend and No. 44 Theo Dean of Cal along the way.
At the ITA All-American Championships, Maxted bettered Tennessee's 34th-ranked Alex Kotzen, 7-6 (1), 6-1 in the opening round before downing Dean a second time. He locked up his spot at NCAA's via a 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 defeat of No. 35 Will Jansen.
Maxted is 6-4 vs. ranked players this fall and is debuting at the NCAA Championships. He and Jong qualified in doubles in 2023 but did not participate.

Chan arguably isn't supposed to be here. He was an alternate for ITA Sectionals and was added to the bracket as an injury replacement the day before play began.
In turn, Chan faced his teammate, fellow sophomore Julian Alonso, who earned a wild card. Chan took a 6-4, 6-2 decision in the all-TCU battle.
He then faced match point in the round of 16 vs. Michigan's Patorn Hanchaikul. Chan rolled to a 6-1 opening set but surrendered a set two tiebreaker, 4-7, and trailed his Wolverine counterpart 3-5 in the decisive third frame. He won the ensuing four games and clinched the match on receive. Playing loose the following day, Chan outclassed Baylor's Oskar Brostrom Poulsen, 6-3, 6-3 in the quarterfinals to advance to NCAA's.
Chan leads TCU in combined overall victories this fall with 19. He is 11-4 in singles play.
Lui Maxted and Pedro Vives: Path to the NCAA Championships
The duo picked up a signature win in the Sectionals quarterfinals, downing No. 3 Togan Tokac and Guilo Perego of Texas A&M, 7-6 (1), 6-4. They received a walkover in the finals and in turn secured an automatic bid after Michigan's Gavin Young and Bjorn Swenson withdrew due to injury.
Vives and Maxted reached the doubles quarterfinals at the All-American Championships, putting them a win away from qualifying back in September. Playing their third match of day three of the event, Vives and Maxted found themselves on the wrong end of a 10-8 tiebreaker after alternating 7-5 sets with Baylor's Marko Miladinovic and Poulsen.
The senior tandem is 5-2 overall and 3-0 in ranked tilts in 2024-25.
