FORT WORTH – TCU's first shot at securing a 2022-23 national title has arrived, as the Horned Frogs are set to compete at the ITA All-American Championships from Oct. 1-9 in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
The nine-day affair takes place at the Michael D. Case Center on the campus of the University of Tulsa and the Case Tennis Center in nearby LaFortune Park.
Tournament Structure
A strong showing up north undoubtedly reaffirms TCU's placement among the elite men's tennis programs in the NCAA. Around 250 singles players and 60 doubles teams are converging on the Sooner State. The main draw of the Men's All-American Singles Championship includes 19 of the top-20 ranked players featured in the ITA Collegiate Tennis National Preseason Rankings.
Pre-qualifying rounds run from Oct. 1-2, followed by the qualifying rounds on Oct. 3-4. The main singles and doubles draws begin on Oct. 5 and conclude on Oct. 9. A complete tournament bracket will be released in the coming days.
Competing for TCU
TCU is sending four members of its eight-player roster to Tulsa. The Horned Frogs' tournament run begins on Oct. 3. All four of its singles entries and both doubles teams earned automatic berths into either the qualifying rounds or main draw.
No. 5 Luc Fomba headlines the Horned Frogs' singles entries. He secured an automatic qualification into the 64-man main singles draw. The four-time ITA All-American is the No. 4 seed in the bracket.
The Horned Frogs will be represented in the qualifying round by No. 58 Sander Jong, No. 66 Lui Maxted and No. 87 Pedro Vives. The trio must win three matches to advance to the main draw.
Both of TCU's doubles pairings qualified for the main draw. Jong and Maxted are debuting as the No. 3 ITA doubles team while Fomba is teaming up with Vives.
Jong and Maxted are playing together for the first time this fall. The duo is the second-highest ranked doubles pairing in the tournament. Jong and Maxted concluded the 2022 campaign ranked No. 11 after compiling an 18-7 overall record on their way to All-Big 12 second team accolades.
Fomba is trading in his usual doubles partner in Jake Fearnley. They claimed the top preseason ITA doubles ranking and earned an automatic qualification into the main draw. Fearnley, though, is four days removed from winning the main singles championship at the Battle in the Bay Classic. He earned a wild card to a series of ATP Challenger events beginning in October and was forced to withdraw to prepare for his stint on the professional circuit.
Each member of the Horned Frogs' quartet has competed at the ITA All-American Championships at least once.
Fomba notched two victories in the qualifying doubles round alongside Fearnley in 2021. Wednesday's match signifies Fomba's third qualification to the Men's All-American Singles Championship, as he advanced to the main singles draw in 2019 and 2021.
Maxted and Vives both won their first qualifying singles match at the 2021 ITA All-American Championships.

TCU enjoyed a spectacular opening week to the fall portion of its schedule at the Battle in the Bay Classic and M15 Fayetteville from Sept. 19-25.

He lost just one set and defeated two ITA top-120 opponents throughout his championship-winning run, including No. 32 Jonas Erikssson Ziverts of Arizona 6-4, 7-5 in the finals.
Fomba won his first three singles matches in the Bay Area to advance to the semifinals. He joined Fearnley in earning an ATP Challenger wild card. The Frenchman was the No. 1 overall seed and highest-rated player in the tournament.
Vives won the Battle in the Bay Classic consolation draw via four straight sweeps to cap a 4-1 week.
Jong split off from the group in Arkansas and accomplished his goal of adding points to his ATP ranking. The Amsterdam native arrived in Fayetteville ranked No. 924 on the ATP Tour and departed with the No. 911 ranking after winning his first two matches and claiming a spot in the quarterfinals.
