TCU records first victory in program history at UCLA
LOS ANGELES – No. 3 TCU men's tennis (14-2) delivered its second road win of the season on Thursday afternoon, taking down UCLA, 4-2, at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. TCU won the doubles point with a pair of convincing victories, before winning three straight set singles matches. Freshman Pedro Vives defended five set points in his match at No. 5, winning five of the last six points to win his tiebreaker, 9-7, and clinch the victory for the Horned Frogs.
TCU is now 2-0 in road matches and 6-0 in matches away from the purple courts. This was TCU's first-ever victory at UCLA after dropping the first three opportunities in 1977, '78 and '80.
"Great road win," head coach David Roditi said. "We made history today, beating UCLA at UCLA. It took great effort. We knew it was going to be a battle. It's always so hard to beat good teams on the road. It's a young team for UCLA and they've lost a bit lately, but we know that, as a highly ranked team, we're going to get everyone's best shot. Charlie did a great job playing at No. 1 and we played one of our most complete doubles points from start to finish. I'm proud of our guys there. Lui and Pedro did a great job of closing out their matches. As we can all see, it's so easy to lose. You have to keep playing, keep competing and keep fighting for every point. We're happy to get this win but we have to continue to get better. We had a great TCU crowd out here today, with a lot of Southern California Frogs and family out here to support us. We're so thankful to have that support. It means a lot, especially on the road. Go Frogs!"
The Horned Frogs made an early push in doubles play, going up a break on all three courts within the first five games. Sander Jong and Lui Maxted proved their No. 4 national ranking with a 6-1 victory at No. 2. Juan Carlos Aguilar and Pedro Vives played their best match of the season together, winning 6-2 at No. 3 to clinch the doubles point. This was TCU's first doubles point outdoors (1-1) and their 14th of the season (14-2).]
