Trio of Horned Frogs Head to San Diego for ITA National Fall Championships
11/1/2022 7:31:00 PM | Men's Tennis
TCU will be represented by Jake Fearnley, Sander Jong and Lui Maxted
FORT WORTH – The ultimate prize in the fall tennis season is within reach for TCU, as the Horned Frogs are traveling three athletes to San Diego for the ITA Fall National Championships on Nov. 2-6 at the Barnes Tennis Center.
Sander Jong and Lui Maxted are set to compete in the main doubles draw. They earned an automatic berth to the tournament after posting a runner-up finish at the ITA Texas Regional on Oct. 18 in Waco.
Jong and Maxted will be joined by Jake Fearnley, who received one-of-eight at-large bids into the 32-man singles draw.
Jong, a senior from Amsterdam, is making his second consecutive tournament appearance. He advanced to the semifinals of the 2021 men's doubles ITA Fall National Championship alongside sophomore Pedro Vives.
Fearnley can enter rarefied TCU men's tennis air should he battle his way to the championship match. TCU has never claimed the singles crown at the ITA Fall National Championships. Only Paul Robinson, who notched consecutive runner-up finishes from 1994-1995, has played for all the marbles.
Tournament Structure
The TCU trio are in elite company along the California coastline. Only 64 athletes – 32 singles players and 16 two-man doubles pairings – qualify.
Of the entrants, 48 received automatic berths at ITA Regional Championships (two players and two doubles teams per region). Fearnley was one of just two players to be awarded an ITA wild card.

Competing for TCU
Jong and Maxted firmly lived up to their billing as the preseason ITA No. 3 doubles pairing at the ITA Texas Regional. Playing together for the first time this fall, Jong and Maxted swept their first four opponents to advance to the championship match.
They open the tournament against Vishwa Aduru and James Hopper of Case Western Reserve University at 4:30 p.m. CT in the round of 32 on Wednesday.
Jong also sports a 5-3 singles record this fall. He advanced to the round of 16 of the main singles draw of the ITA Texas Regional.
Fearnley, who owns the No. 65 ITA singles ranking, has been as dominant as any player across the NCAA ranks. The junior is 9-1 in singles play in two fall tournaments. He has won 17o-f-20 sets played. Fearnley became the first Horned Frog since Alex Rybakov in 2018 to win the singles championship at the Battle in the Bay Classic in September. He earned a wild card onto the ATP Challengers Tour with the result. He parlayed his San Francisco showing into a stellar showing in Waco. Fearnley swept his way into the semifinals before falling in the semifinals in a coin flip of a match to Texas A&M's Pierce Rollins, 2-6, 6-2, 6-6 [8-10].
His first round assignment is No. 75 Gavin Young of Michigan. First serve is scheduled for 1:15 p.m. CT.
TCU also applied for at-large consideration for senior Luc Fomba. The Frenchman is slotted fifth overall in the ITA singles rankings and is one month removed from a run to the quarterfinals of the ITA All-American Championships. He was forced to withdraw from the ITA Texas Regional due to injury.
Recapping the Fall Slate
TCU enjoyed a spectacular opening week to the fall portion of its schedule at the Battle in the Bay Classic and M15 Fayetteville from Sept. 19-25.
The Horned Frogs posted a 15-5 combined singles record across the two tournaments.
Fearnley's 5-0 mark and main singles championship at the Battle of the Bay Classic was the apex of TCU's performance in singles. He lost just one set and defeated two ITA top-120 opponents throughout his championship-winning run, including No. 32 Jonas Erikssson Ziverts of Arizona 6-4, 7-5 in the finals.
Fomba won his first three singles matches in the Bay Area to advance to the semifinals. He joined Fearnley in earning an ATP Challenger wild card. The Frenchman was the No. 1 overall seed and highest-rated player in the tournament.
Vives won the Battle in the Bay Classic consolation draw via four straight sweeps to cap a 4-1 week.
Jong split off from the group in Arkansas and accomplished his goal of adding points to his ATP ranking. The Amsterdam native arrived in Fayetteville ranked No. 924 on the ATP Tour and departed with the No. 911 ranking after winning his first two matches and claiming a spot in the quarterfinals.
Fomba's quarterfinal appearance was the apex of TCU's run at the ITA All-American Championships from Oct. 3-7. Both of the Horned Frogs doubles teams advanced to the round of 16 of the main draw. Fomba played alongside Vives while Jong and Maxted made their 2022-23 debut.
TCU helped solidify its status as the top men's tennis program in the Lone Star State in its penultimate fall tournament. The Horned Frogs notched 16 combined singles and doubles victories and posted a 14-4 overall record in non-TCU matches.
Five of TCU's six entrants advanced to the quarterfinals in at least one draw. Freshman Sebastian Gorzny joined Fearnley in the singles semifinals in his TCU debut. He and Vives played their way into the quarters of doubles before bowing out to Jong and Maxted.
