TCU Sweeps the Horned Frog Challenge

Fort Worth -- No. 9 TCU beach volleyball (7-1) had a clean sweep today, winning both matches on the second day of the Horned Frog Challenge. The Horned Frogs defeated UAB, 3-2 and Southern Mississippi, 5-0. The top three pairs went 6-0 today with clutch wins coming from each position. The Horned Frogs have now one seven consecutive matches, tied for the longest winning streak in program history (first since 2017).

The Frogs started off slow against UAB, dropping the fourth and fifth positions early on. Rochelle Scott and Maria Gonzalez took the first win of the match in straight sets, to remain unbeaten as a pair. Daniela Alvarez and Tania Moreno Mateeva took the second win of the match in straight sets, winning their second set by a landslide, 21-4, the largest margin of victory by any TCU pairing in program history. For the fourth time as a pair, Olivia Blackburn and Hailey Brockett clinched the win for the Horned Frogs, in straight sets. The duo remains undefeated, 6-0 this year.

The Frogs swept the match against Southern Mississippi, 5-0. Peyton Yamagata secured her first collegiate win at the No. 5 position with Megan Jacobsen. Caroline White and Tara Patton notched their first win as a pair at the No. 4 position by winning in three sets. The top three pairings all won in straight sets to top off the victory.

Rochelle Scott remains undefeated, 8-0, at the end of the weekend. It is the longest win streak of her career.

QUICK HITS AGAINST UAB:

After losing the first two matches, TCU needed its top 3 pairs to win to secure the comeback victory.
Scott and Gonzalez scored the first point for the Horned Frogs at the No. 3 position by winning in two sets: 21-11, 25-23.
This is the fourth time the duo has had a match go past 21 points, they are a perfect 4-0 in those sets.
Alvarez and Moreno tied the dual at the No. 1 position, winning in two sets: 26-24, 21-4.
21-4 is the largest margin of victory from any TCU pairing in program history.
This is the second time this year the pair has held an opponent below 10 points in a set.
It is the third time this season that the duo has won a set by more than double their opponent's score.
Blackburn and Brockett secured a TCU victory in the No. 2 position winning in two sets: 21-7, 21-11.
This is the fourth time the Blackburn/Brockett duo has clinched a match win for the Frogs.
They set their career high for largest margin of victory in a match, 24 points (42-18).
Megan Jacobsen and Peyton Yamagata won an exhibition match, 21-17, 21-19. The win did not count toward the dual score and will not be reflected in their career records.

QUICK HITS AGAINST SOUTHERN MISS:

Jacobsen and Yamagata scored the first point for TCU and win as a pair winning in two sets at the No. 5 position: 21-13, 21-14
This marks Yagamata's first collegiate win.
Yagamata is the 4th member of TCU's highest rated recruiting class to win her first match, joining Josie Miller, Tania Moreno Mateeva and Maria Gonzalez.
White and Patton scored the next point for the Horned Frogs in the No. 4 position by winning in three sets: 20-22, 21-15, 15-11.
This is the pair's first win together.
Scott and Gonzalez secured the Frog victory in two dominating sets at the No. 3 position: 21-12, 21-14.
The duo remains undefeated this season, winning six straight matches.
Scott advances 8-0 on the season. The longest win streak of her career.
Blackburn and Brockett scored the next point with a straight set win at the No. 2 position: 21-9, 21-9.
It was their second win of the day as well. Blackburn/Brockett have now won six straight matches.
Alvarez and Moreno rounded out the sweep for the Frogs with a match victory in the No.1 position: 21-11, 22-20.
Three TCU pairs, Alvarez/Mateeva, Blackburn/Brockett and Scott/Gonzalez went 2-0 on the day.
Kathryn Kramer and Logyn Hinds won an exhibition match, 21-5, 21-9. The win did not count toward the dual score and will not be reflected in their career records.
TCU won all 4 matches this weekend, bringing the overall team record to an exceptional 28-12 after eight duals.

Up Next
The Horned Frogs will be in Gulf Shores, Ala. next weekend where they will play in the "March to May" tournament hosted by UAB. They will take on UAB (4-3), No. 10 Grand Canyon (4-1), No. 19 Georgia State (3-2) and No. 1 LSU (5-0). TCU will kick off the tournament on Friday, March 12 at 10am vs No. 10 Grand Canyon.
