TCU Falls on Opening Day of March to May Tournament

TCU Falls to GCU 3-2

Gulf Shores, Ala. -- No. 9 TCU beach volleyball (7-2) came up just short against No. 10 Grand Canyon on day one of the March to May tournament hosted by UAB. GCU took the third set in the final match of the day to give TCU its second loss of the season.

The Frogs had a slow start to the morning as both the No. 4 and 5 positions lost in straight sets. Daniela Alvarez and Tania Moreno Mateeva recorded a quality win at No. 1, putting TCU on the board, 1-2. Olivia Blackburn and Hailey Brockett followed their lead, taking court two in straight sets, tying up the score 2-2. Rochelle Scott and Maria Gonzalez were left at the No. 3 position to determine the outcome for the Frogs. The duo dropped their first match as a pair in three hard-fought sets.

QUICK HITS AGAINST GCU:
●        After losing the first two matches, TCU needed its top 3 pairs to win to secure the comeback victory.
●        Alvarez and Moreno scored the first point for the Horned Frogs at the No. 1 position by winning in two sets: 21-19, 21-18.
●        The duo is now 8-1 on the season and riding a three match win streak.
●        Blackburn and Brockett tied the dual with a victory in the No. 2 position, winning in two sets: 21-11, 21-18.
●        The remains unbeaten, 7-0, as a pair this season.
●        They are the only remaining undefeated pairing, among those that have played in three or more matches.
●        The Horned Frogs fall to 30-15 in all matches this season.

The Horned Frogs continue play tomorrow at the March to May tournament as they take on No. 2 Florida State at 8 a.m., CT and No. 20 Tulane at 1 p.m., CT.
