TCU defeats two ranked opponents in back-to-back matches for the first time since 2016
FORT WORTH – No. 49 TCU women's tennis (8-5, 2-1) capped off a Sunflower State sweep on Sunday afternoon, taking down No. 43 Kansas State, 4-3, at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center in Fort Worth.
The Horned Frogs finish the weekend with two 4-3 wins over No. 45 Kansas and No. 43 Kansas State. It is the first time TCU has beaten both K-State and Kansas in the same season since 2016 and the first time TCU has beaten two ranked opponents in back to back matches since 2016 as well.
"I know it sounded like a broken record earlier in the year when I would talk about how well we've been progressing without all winning results," head coach Lee Taylor Walker said. "I'm so happy for this team to get wins like this. We've had to deal with a lot of adversity between injuries, the pandemic and everything else. I'm really proud of our perseverance. We have to celebrate these moments. 4-3 wins are hard to come by, and now we have two in one weekend. Credit to Kansas State, they came back and made it difficult for us. They showed a lot of character today. Big match for Tate [Schroeder] to get back on track with a win. That will give her a lot of confidence moving forward. Christopher Williams and Aleksa Cveticanin did a great job today. Aleksa is out with an injury but she's taken this time to be our third coach. When she comes back, this is really going to benefit her. Christopher did a great job working with Tate, connecting with her and working through her match to help us get the win."
For the second consecutive match, TCU split singles competition, 3-3, winning the match with the doubles point. The Frogs have been perfect in doubles play since changing up the lineup last week. They won both completed matches today from the No. 1 and No. 2 pairings. Mercedes Aristegui and Isabel Pascual Montalvo recorded their third ranked win of the season, taking down the No. 46 ranked tandem in the country, 6-2, after Marie Norris and Stevie Kennedy notched their second win as a pair this year to win the doubles point. TCU is now 6-0 in doubles competition since shifting around its pairings.
In singles play, the top of the lineup came through. TCU recorded wins on the top three courts to claim the three points needed to win the dual. Tate Schroeder, Norris and Aristegui delivered the wins to give TCU its third straight win and a 2-1 record in Big 12 duals.
