TCU Men’s Tennis finished Sunday 7-0 to cap off a 12-win weekend
FORT WORTH – TCU men's tennis played its first tournament of the fall 2020 season this weekend, winning 12 matches across three days at the Bayard H. Friedman Center. Jake Fearnley led all Horned Frogs with three singles wins to help TCU finish 9-5 in singles competition over student-athletes from Texas, Texas A&M and Oklahoma.
"First of all, we're super excited to be given the chance to play again, and to have such great competition come to our beautiful facilities," Head Coach David Roditi said. "Now once you start playing, and get greedy, I thought we got what we wanted out of this weekend, an assessment of where we are. I was pleased that we won a couple doubles matches today but that's a place we need to work on. Winning all five singles and both doubles today was a great way to end the weekend. But now, we have to go over what we did and try to get better for ITA Regionals this weekend. The highlight of the weekend was our staff and the work they did to get our facilities safe. We felt awful not allowing fans but we understand it's what we had to do. Jonathan Pham and our staff did a great job making this tournament happen and we're very grateful."
Doubles Recap
The Horned Frogs found their footing late in doubles play, winning the final two matches of the weekend to finish 3-5. All five-participating student-athletes recorded a doubles victory, taking down pairings from Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Texas.
Singles Recap
TCU started singles play strong and finished stronger on its way to a 9-5 record for the weekend. Once again, all five Horned Frogs won at least one singles match on the weekend, headlined by a 3-0 weekend from Jake Fearnley in the top-flight.
Fearnley finished tournament runner-up for his 3-0 record in the top-flight, taking down two opponents ranked in the final ITA rankings of the spring season, including a win over No. 44 Siem Woldeab of Texas on Sunday. He will be hoping these results serve him well in the ITA Fall Regional All-American Championships draw, set to be released later this coming week.
Luc Fomba appeared to pick up where he left off the spring season, with strong serving and impressive shot making on his way to a 2-1 record in the singles top-flight. Fomba bested the only ranked player that he faced, taking down Oklahoma's Mason Beiler (No. 104) in straight sets on Friday.
Juan Martín made his return to the purple courts after dealing with a myriad of injuries. The Argentinian looked very strong, posting a pair of singles win and a doubles triumph on the weekend. Martín gutted out an intense victory on Sunday, besting Jacob Bullard from Texas in two grueling sets: 7-6(6), 7-5. It was Bullard's only singles loss on the weekend.
Max Kurzban and Eduardo Roldan each garnered wins in singles and doubles play. Roldan collected a swift straight-set win over Welsh Hotard from Oklahoma while Kurzban fought toward a three-set victory over Nevin Arimilli of Texas on Sunday afternoon.
