TCU will welcome two top-10 opponents to end the 2019 home season.
FORT WORTH, Texas – The 2019 home season for the No. 10 TCU men's tennis team will come to an end this weekend as the Horned Frogs welcome No. 4 Texas and No. 8 to the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center in Fort Worth.
TCU (16-4, 1-1 Big 12) will face the Longhorns (19-2, 2-0) at 3 p.m., on Saturday, April 6 before taking on the Aggies (18-4, 8-1 SEC) on Monday, April 8 at 5:30 p.m. Admission to both matches is free to and fans can enjoy free pizza courtesy of Buffalo Bros., and free popcorn courtesy of King Korn between the doubles and singles portion of the matches. The match against Texas will also serve as 'Senior Day' with free Salsa Limon tacos to the first 300 fans and free purple cowboy hats to the first 50 fans.
TCU Notables
TCU has won 11 of its last 12 matches played and went 1-1 last weekend in opening Big 12 Conference action. The Frogs dropped a 5-2 decision to No. 6 Baylor on Friday before rebounding with a 5-2 win over No. 27 Texas Tech on Sunday. The team has downed nine ranked opponents this season and are 11-1 in matches played on the Bernard J. 'Tut' Bartzen Varsity Courts.
Senior Alex Rybakov is now 20-1 on the season with wins in his last nine straight matches as he moved up to No. 4 in the Oracle/ITA rankings. Alastair Gray also moved up in the singles poll and sits at No. 20 now with a 16-3 mark on the season with six wins over ranked foes. Bertus Kruger leads the team in singles action with 21 overall wins and five victories over ranked foes. Kruger and Reese Stalder now sit at No. 13 in the doubles poll with 15 wins on the season and four over ranked opponents while Rybakov and Gray check back into the doubles poll at No. 45.
Scouting the Longhorns
Texas stayed at No. 4 in the latest Oracle/ITA team rankings after the Longhorns started Big 12 play with a 2-0 record. Texas picked up a 7-0 sweep of Texas Tech before getting the 4-3 victory over Baylor to end the weekend. Texas has only dropped two matches this season with a semi-final loss to then-No. 2 Ohio State at the ITA Team Indoor National Championship and a 4-2 defeat at the hands of then-No. 15 USC at the end of March. The Longhorns have four ranked singles players including two in the top 10 in No. 5 Yuya Ita and No. 7 Christian Sigsgaard. Sigsgaard also has a top-10 doubles ranking as he pairs up with Harrison Scott for a No. 3 ranking.
Scouting the Aggies
Texas A&M recently snapped a 14-match winning streak after dropping a 5-2 decision to No. 2 Florida last weekend. The Aggies rebounded with a 6-1 win over Kentucky to improve to 18-4 overall this season and 8-1 in SEC play. Four Texas A&M players have an Oracle/ITA ranking lead by Valentin Vacherot at No. 40 and Carlos Aguilar at No. 56. Hady Habib sits at No. 75 and Barnaby Smith is at No. 92 to round out the rankings. Aguilar and Smith also hold a doubles ranking of No. 16 with the duo holding a 10-2 mark on the year and wins in their last five straight matches.
All-Time Series Records
Saturday's match will be the 50th meeting all-time between TCU and Texas with the Longhorns holding the advantage with a 28-21 mark in the all-time series record. The Frogs have won the last four straight matches between the teams after Texas had won eight straight from 1997 to 2014. This will be the 21st match to take place in Fort Worth with Texas holding a 12-8 advantage in those matches. Since becoming conference opponents in 2012, TCU is 4-2 all-time against Texas.
Sunday's match between TCU and Texas A&M will be the 59th meeting all-time between the programs with the Frogs leading the all-time series with a 39-19 mark. TCU has picked up the win in the last five consecutive matches dating back to 2015 including three-straight 4-3 victories. The match will be the 22nd one played at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center with TCU 14-7 in the matches played in Fort Worth.
