TCU will start Big 12 play at Baylor on Friday before welcoming Texas Tech on Sunday.
FORT WORTH, Texas – Big 12 Conference action will get started this weekend for the No. 9 TCU men's tennis team as the Horned Frogs first travel to No. 6 Baylor for a match on Friday, March 29 before welcoming No. 20 Texas Tech on Sunday, March 31.
TCU (15-3) will face the Bears (17-2) at 6 p.m., at the Hurd Tennis Center in Waco on Friday before returning to the friendly confines of the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center to take on the Red Raiders (13-7) on Sunday at 1 p.m. Admission to the match against Texas Tech is free to and fans can enjoy free pizza courtesy of Buffalo Bros., and free popcorn courtesy of King Korn between the doubles and singles portion of the matches.
TCU Notables
TCU enters conference action riding a 10-match winning streak after picking up a 4-0 sweep on SMU on Tuesday. In the streak, TCU has defeated six ranked opponents including three ranked inside the top 15. The Frogs are looking to capture their fourth straight Big 12 regular season title after going 14-1 in Big 12 matches the last three years.
Senior Alex Rybakov stayed at No. 7 in the Oracle/ITA singles poll, while Alastair Gray moved up one spot to No. 25 and Bertus Kruger now sits at No. 115. Rybakov is 18-1 on the year and riding a seven-match winning streak with an 10-1 mark against ranked opponents. Gray is also on a winning streak as he has won his last eight matches and boasts a 15-2 mark on the year while Kruger leads the lead with 21 wins. Kruger and Reese Stalder have won their last eight straight doubles matches and moved up 12 spots in the doubles poll to No. 6.
Scouting the Bears
Baylor has only dropped two matches this season with both coming at the ITA Team National Indoor Championship and sits at No. 6 in the Oracle/ITA poll. Since then, the Bears have won their last eight straight matches and recently won the BNP Paribas Open Collegiate Tennis Challenge. Baylor boasts the No. 1 doubles pair in the country in Sven Lah and Jimmy Bendeck with the duo holding a 20-3 record this season with a 9-2 mark at the No. 1 spot and an 8-1 record against ranked opponents. The team also has three ranked singles players in No. 40 Johnannes Schretter, No. 45 Matias Soto and No. 82 Will Little.
Scouting the Red Raiders
Texas Tech sits at No. 29 in the latest Oracle/ITA poll with wins in four of the last five matches played. The Red Raiders recently competed in the Rice Invitational where they went 2-1 with wins over Utah State (4-0) and host Rice (4-1). Texas Tech has one ranked singles player in No. 99 Parker Wynn who has a 17-8 record on the season and two wins over ranked opponents. Wynn pairs up with Bjorn Thomson for a No. 9 doubles ranking with the duo holding 25 wins on the season with an 11-4 mark at the No. 1 spot and three wins over ranked foes.
All-Time Series Records
Friday's match will be the 57th meeting all-time between TCU and Baylor with the Frogs leading the all-time series record at 35-21. The teams faced off twice last year with TCU getting the 4-1 win during the regular season, while Baylor upset the Frogs 4-2 in the semifinals of the Big 12 Championship. This will be the 25th match to take place in Waco with the series all even at 12-12. The last time the teams met at the Hurd Tennis Center, TCU scored the 4-1 victory in 2017 to clinch the Big 12 regular season title. Since becoming Big 12 foes, Baylor holds a 6-3 advantage against the Frogs.
TCU and Texas Tech will be facing off for the 46th time in program history on Sunday with the Frogs holding a 39-6 overall advantage in the all-time series. TCU has won the last four straight matches in the all-time series and hold a 21-2 advantage in matches played at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center. As conference opponents, TCU is 8-1 against Texas Tech with the only loss coming in 2016 in a 4-2 decision in Lubbock.
