FORT WORTH, Texas -- In front of 1,707 fans, the largest crowd this season at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center, the No. 10 TCU men's tennis team upset recently crowned SEC Champion and No. 7 Texas A&M, 4-0, for the second time this season on Saturday afternoon.
After defeating the Aggies (17-4) in January in College Station, the Horned Frogs (19-6) were able to blank Texas A&M at home for their third victory over a top-10 ranked opponent this season and fifth straight to stay undefeated in the month of April and 12-0 at home.
"It is a huge win," head coach David Roditi said. "I have so much respect for the Texas A&M program overall and they have been absolutely dominating us for a long time. For this group to put in the work they have been doing and getting better and with the freshmen coming through like that speaks a lot about what this team really wants. This team was hungry and for them to come out and beat the SEC Champions 4-0 makes me so happy for them and so proud. It is just a great moment for our program."
Hudson Blake and Guillermo Nuñez got TCU started in the match with a quick win, as the duo dominated Arthur Rinderknech and AJ Catanzariti, 6-1, at No. 3 doubles for the pairs' fourth win at the third position.
TCU was able to wrap up the doubles point on court two, as No. 29 Trevor Johnson and Cameron Norrie notched their fifth straight win and 17th overall by downing their third ranked opponent this season in No. 41 Jeremy Efferdy and Jordan Szabo, 6-3.
"We played so bad in doubles at SMU in our last match and there was only one way we could go in doubles action and it was to get better," Roditi said. For our No. 3 doubles team to come out like that and take a quick set like that is huge. The way we look at the doubles point is that it is almost like a bonus point for us because we haven't been getting it that often. We are so used to not winning it that it is just a nice bonus when we do have it and it just makes a huge difference especially when you are playing at home. For a visiting team to come out here and be down the doubles point and take four singles from us is going to take a really good team to do that."
Singles started with the Frogs winning three of the six first sets in a commanding fashion. No. 50 Norrie blanked his opponent, while No. 63 Nuñez and Facundo Lugones notched 6-3 and 6-4 wins, respectively.
Those first sets were crucial, as Norrie was the first one off the court with a 6-0, 6-4 defeat of Rinderknech, before Lugones got his second win over a ranked opponent this season by upsetting No. 78 Catanzariti, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 5 singles.
Nuñez clinched the match and his 24th win of the season by taking out No. 64 Shane Vinsant, 6-3, 6-2, at the No. 2 position to help the team to its 19th win of the season.
"That is one of our goals is to protect our home here," Roditi said. "For us to be able to play those teams at home is great. What a crowd and what a great day for college tennis. It was a clean match, a great atmosphere and people came out and supported us.
"I want to thank the alumni, the country club members and just the entire community for the support today. The guys really feed off of it and I hope to see every one of them at our match against Texas next weekend."
TCU will wrap up the regular season at home and its conference slate by hosting No. 9 Texas on Saturday, April 18 at 1 p.m., on the Bernard J. `Tut' Bartzen Varsity Courts. The match will serve as the home finale for all five seniors -- Lugones, Arnau Dachs, Nick Chappell, Will Stein and Blake Wiggins.
