"It was a little bit of a tactical game," remarked head coach Eric Bell. "I think that we came out good and scored a good goal in the corner. Unfortunately we had the own goal against us and we had to figure out how to score some more goal. The information that we gave the players at the half, they took it to heart and went out and we scored an early goal in the half. Then, the game was ours the rest of the way. It was awesome."
The Horned Frogs made the most of their scoring opportunities, scoring four times on six shots on goal. The Frogs and the Mustangs both took 10 shots, but the Frog defense limited SMU to just three shots on goal. TCU goalkeeper Vittoria Arnold finished the night with two saves, both coming in the first half.
"The kids are buying into what we are preaching and working really hard on the defensive end to make it hard for people to come in and play," said Bell. "On the attacking end, they are doing exactly what we ask them to do. We are creating a lot of goal-scoring opportunities and fortunately, for us, we are putting them away."
TCU started the scoring early, jumping out to the lead in the fourth minute. Prokof hit Emma Heckendorn in stride and she dribbled in one-on-one with the goalkeeper. Her shot beat Lissi Lonsberry low to the near post for a 1-0 lead.
Eight minutes later, the Mustangs would get the equalizer on an unlucky play. SMU earned a throw in deep in the offensive zone and the feed into the 18-yard box was deflected in over a leaping Arnold for an own goal and a tie game.
SMU gained momentum from the lucky break and outshot the Frogs 8-4 in the half. TCU's back line of Bobbi Clemmer, Lauren Sajewich, Ryan Williams, Meghan Murphy and Brooke Ingram did a good job keeping the shots to distance and allowing Arnold to make a pair of saves.
TCU didn't waste time regaining the lead out of halftime. Kela Gray created a golden scoring opportunity as she raced in on goal. Her shot was blocked away by a leaping Lonsberry, setting up a corner kick. Prokof's feed was on target as it deflected off Murphy to a wide-open Gray who knocked in the eventually game-winner just over a minute into the half.
The Frogs kept the pressure on as they tried to get the insurance goal. Their hard work paid off in the 71st minute. SMU was whistled for a foul along the sideline. Clemmer took the free kick from about 35 yards out and hit Sajewich, who's shot went into the upper corner for a 3-1 lead.
More pressure and hard work resulted in another goal 11 minutes later. Madeline Hamm made a strong run down the sideline and crossed the ball to Brittany Little, who tapped the ball to a wide-open Eryn Spencer for her first career-goal.
TCU improves to 6-3 overall. The Frogs will hit the road for their final non-conference match of the season Sunday. TCU will take on North Texas in Denton Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
