FORT WORTH, Texas - Two seniors and two freshmen will head to New York to participate in the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships on Nov. 6-9 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows.
Seniors and doubles partners Nick Chappell and Will Stein, along with the pair of newcomers in Cameron Norrie and Trevor Johnson will take part in the championships starting on Thursday and will be the first student-athletes from TCU to compete at the national tournament since 2004.
The USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships serves as the culmination of the fall college tennis season. Hosted by Columbia University, this prestigious event features a 32-player singles draw and a 20-team doubles draw for both men and women. This is the fifth consecutive year the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships will be held at the home of the U.S. Open.
The No. 5 ranked pair of Chappell and Stein were the first to earn a bid to the championships and became the 19th doubles pair in school history to make the bracket after winning the consolation draw at the Saint Francis Health System/ITA All-American Tennis Championships in early October. The duo were able to defeat four top-20 ranked teams in a row and two ranked in the top five to take the crown.
Chappell and Stein earned the No. 4 seed in the bracket and a bye in the first round of action. The pair will open the tournament with the winner of Tomislav Gregurovic and Tin Ostojic of Witchita State and Jamie Sanchez-Canamares Rios and Deni Zmak of Embry Riddle at 4:30 p.m., CDT.
Cameron Norrie and Trevor Johnson were able to sweep the singles and doubles titles at the USTA/ITA Texas Regional Championships just a few weeks ago to earn their way into the tournament. Norrie became the third freshman this year to nab the singles crown at his respective regional, while the pairing of Norrie and Johnson became only the second all-freshmen doubles tandem in the history of the regionals to snag the title.
Norrie earned the No. 7 seed in the singles bracket and will face No. 98 Dominik Koepfer of Tulane to open the championships on Thursday at 9:45 a.m., CDT. Norrie and Johnson earned a bye in the first round of the doubles bracket and are set to face the No. 18 ranked pair of Henry Craig and Alex Gasson of Denver in the Sweet 16 at 3 p.m., CDT.
