FORT WORTH -- No. 24 TCU avenged one of its only two conference losses of the season in style Saturday, running past Wyoming, 78-59, to set a new program record for consecutive victories at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum.
The Lady Frogs won for the 20th straight game at the DMC, which broke the previous school record of 19 wins set between Jan. 28, 2006 and Feb. 22, 2007. The team last lost at home on Jan. 13, 2009 to BYU.
The squad improved to 19-5 overall this season and 9-2 in Mountain West Conference play while keeping hold of at least a game-and-a-half lead in the league standings. The win helped TCU get even for a 73-67 road loss to the Cowgirls back on Jan. 13 that snapped the squad's season-high seven-game winning streak.
TCU showed no ill effects from Wednesday's epic four-overtime road victory over Utah, taking a 15-point lead to the locker room at halftime before putting Wyoming away early in the second. The Frogs were sharp on offense and defense Saturday, shooting exactly 50.0 percent from the field while holding the Cowgirls to only 31.1 percent shooting. The squad also forced Wyoming into 24 turnovers that resulted into 27 Frogs points. TCU itself had only 12 miscues for the game.
Junior guard/forward Helena Sverrisdottir, three days after setting a school record for minutes played with 58 against Utah, had a sensational outing, shooting 7-of-10 from the field, including 2-of-4 from 3-point range, while scoring 19 points. She added six assists and five rebounds and had 12 points and five helpers in the first half while pushing TCU to a 41-26 advantage at the break.
Fellow junior guard Emily Carter continued her steady play with 13 points on 5-of-9 shooting. She extended her streak of consecutive games with a 3-pointer to 22 straight on a first-half bomb. Also reaching double figures for the second straight contest was senior guard Eboni Mangum, who totaled 10 points.
Senior guard TK LaFleur and sophomore guard Antoinette Thompson kicked in five and four assists, respectively, to help the Frogs total 20 helpers for the afternoon.
Two Cowgirls reached double figures in forwards Emily Langford (16) and Hillary Carlson (11). The Frogs put together a much better defensive effort on Carlson than the teams' initial meeting this season, when she totaled 27 points. Guard Aubrey Vandiver pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds to help Wyoming grab a 43-36 advantage on the glass.
Two totally different offensive approaches were on display in the first half, as the Frogs attacked the basket while the Cowgirls distributed the ball outside the arc. Wyoming made six 3-pointers in the opening 13:30 against the Frogs' zone defense to stay within striking distance before TCU switched up its strategies to change the complexion of the game.
The squad went to a man-to-man look for the remainder of the period that helped the Frogs pressure the UW shooters. Wyoming shot only 2-of-11 the rest of the half as TCU went on a 22-6 run for its big advantage at intermission. Sverrisdottir nailed a 3-pointer off a nice feed from Thompson to put the Frogs up by as many as 17 points before guard Randi Richardson recorded one of only two Wyoming baskets inside the arc in the half with under 20 seconds left.
The contest was put out of reach in the second half in the form of a 14-0 Frog run midway through the period that extended the lead to a game-high 31 points at 69-38. Mangum kick-started the spurt with seven straight points on a two layups and a 3-pointer, while Carter finished things off with three consecutive baskets of her own. Carter's last bucket came on a steal at midcourt that she took back the other way for a layup.
Wyoming was able to put together 13 straight points to close to within 18 points with 3:28 remaining, but the game had all but been decided at that point.
TCU looks to keep its four-game winning streak rolling Tuesday, when it pays a visit to preseason MWC favorite San Diego State. Tip-off from the Aztecs' Viejas Arena is set for 9:30 p.m. CT, and the game will be telecast live by The MountainWest Sports Network (The Mtn.).
