SCOUTING THE ULM WARHAWKS
ULM enters Tuesday's game with a 4-2 record after dropping a close 58-56 road decision to UTEP Saturday. The Warhawks' game against the Frogs will mark their sixth on the road in seven contests to open the season.
Head Coach Mona Martin's team posted a 15-16 overall record in 2008-09 and went 7-11 in the Sun Belt Conference. Twelve letterwinners return for this season, including four of five starters. The squad was picked to finish sixth in the West Division of the Sun Belt in the league's annual preseason poll.
Guards Jesse Carrier and Priscilla Mbiandja both own double-figure scoring averages for ULM at 12.5 and 11.5 ppg, respectively. Forward Shannisha Williams leads the squad in rebounding (9.5 rpg), while guard Elizabeth Torres tops the roster in assists (3.8 apg).
LAST TIME WE MET: TCU 82, ULM 46
FORT WORTH (Nov. 28, 1998)--Five Frogs scored in double figures during an 82-46 TCU victory over ULM, then known as Northeast Louisiana.
TCU was led by the Sutton sisters, Jill and Amy, who posted respective scoring totals of 15 and 14 points. The pair combined to go 7-of-11 from 3-point range, with five treys by Jill Sutton. Misty Meadows also scored 14 points, and Tricia Davern--then known as Tricia Payne--had 11 points. Zakiyyah Johnson nearly had a double-double for the Frogs without making a basket, as she went 10-of-12 at the charity stripe while adding nine rebounds.
As a team, the Frogs went 9-of17 from behind the arc and pulled down 52 rebounds. The squad led by 12 points, 37-25, at intermission.
REBOUNDING TURNAROUND
Rebounding was one of the most pressing issues facing TCU in the offseason, and it appears the hard work the squad has put into that area is paying off.
-TCU has outrebounded the opponent in four of six games this season, compared to only six times in all of 2008-09.
-TCU finished last season ranked last in the MWC in rebound margin (-4.7) and seventh in offensive boards (11.20 rpg), compared to rankings of No. 2 in each category (+4.5, 16.3 rpg) entering Tuesday's game.
-Starr Crawford currently leads the MWC in rebounding with a mark of 11.5 rpg. She has had eight boards in each game.
TOEING THE LINE
TCU was one of the nation's top free-throw shooting teams in 2008-09, and that trend has carried over into this season.
-The Frogs currently lead the MWC in free throw percentage at 79.6%.
-TCU has shot over 70.0% at the line in each game, with a streak of 10 straight dating back to last season.
-Eboni Mangum leads the MWC in free throw shooting (100.0%), while Emily Carter (No. 5, 84.0%) and Helena Sverrisdottir (No. 8, 81.0%) also rank in the top 10.
-TCU shattered the previous school record (72.6%; 1999-2000) last year with a season mark of 77.9%.
SHAKE IT UP
TCU head coach Jeff Mittie mixed up his starting lineup for the first time this season prior to the team's Nov. 28 matchup against No. 18 Kansas in the Bahamas, and the strategy paid off.
Antoinette Thompson and Eboni Mangum each earned their first career starts, and both players did their parts in helping TCU earn a 74-69 victory over the Jayhawks. Mangum hit a pair of late 3-pointers to help TCU rally from a nine-point deficit in the second half. Thompson set career highs in field goals, assists and minutes played while providing the Frogs with some aggressive defense at the point.
