Fourth-ranked Horned Frogs earn 4-1 rivalry victory ahead of Big 12 Tournament
WACO, Texas – No. 4 TCU spoiled Baylor's senior day and all-but-solidified a national seed in the NCAA Tournament on Sunday in Waco.
The Horned Frogs outclassed the 11th-ranked Bears 4-1 in their regular season finale at the Hawkins Indoor Tennis Center.
TCU (19-5, 7-1 Big 12) notched its sixth straight win in a contest that was forced inside due to rain throughout the greater central Texas area. The Horned Frogs have now won 11 of their last 12 matches ahead of next week's Big 12 Tournament at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida.
Baylor (20-8, 6-2 Big 12) became only the fourth team to take the doubles point from TCU, securing a 1-0 head start on a tiebreaker victory on court three. But the Frogs permanently turned the match on its ear, sweeping all six opening singles sets. TCU claimed 10-of-11 completed frames and captured courts three through six to sew up the win.
TCU won its 11th straight match at Baylor's expense dating back to 2023. The streak may very well reach 12 in just five days, as the Horned Frogs are likely to face the Bears for a third time this season in Orlando.
Sunday's match levied significant postseason implications.
TCU locked up the No. 2 seed and a first round bye in the Big 12 Tournament. The Frogs will face either the third-seeded Bears or No. 6 seed Utah at 1 p.m. CT on Friday.
No. 10 Arizona won the Big 12 regular season championship by virtue of its home victory over a shorthanded TCU squad on March 22 in Tucson. TCU, the league's highest-ranked team, has not lost since that moment.
The victory over the Bears was good for the Horned Frogs' 10th top-25 victory of the season and eighth on a road or neutral court. That resume likely assures TCU of a top-eight seed and hosting rights through Super Regional weekend of the NCAA Tournament.
Oliver Bonding set the stage for TCU. The freshman bageled Alexandru Chrita in set one and won nine straight games to begin his match on court four. He eventually served out a 6-0, 6-2 win to level the match.
TCU's sophomore Spanish armada of Albert Pedrico and Roger Pascual then stretched the lead to 3-1 with wins on courts five and six. The lefty Pascual put away Louis Bowden in short order at the bottom via a pair of 6-2 frames. Pedrico drew Luc Koenig on the 5-line and proved better in the bigger moments, standing tall for a 7-6 (2), 7-5 win.
With TCU ahead on all three unfinished courts, it was Cooper Woestendick who did the honors with the match-clincher. The ITA No. 61 ranked singles player, Woestendick got the better of No. 46 Connor Van Schalkwyk again. He beat Baylor senior away in straight sets in TCU's 4-1 home victory against the Bears on Feb. 5. Both sets this time around went to a tiebreaker but Woestendick proved better, taking a 7-6 (3), 7-6 (5) win.
TCU has now earned a top-two seed in the Big 12 Tournament in nine of the last 11 seasons.
The Frogs stretched their lead in the all-time series vs. Baylor to 47-26.
Doubles Rundown
Already combating an intimate and raucous home atmosphere, the pressure was amplified for TCU, as Pedrico and Woestendick came up short, 3-6, vs. Koening and Van Schalkwyk on court two.
All three courts were level at 3-3 to begin but breaks remained elusive for the Frogs, as courts one and three went the distance.
Bonding and Duncan Chan faced off with Chirita and Zsombor Velcz at the top flight. Playing the No. 1 for the sixth straight match, the tandem rattled four straight points to go on top 5-3 before serving out a 7-6 (4) victory. Bonding and Chan threatened to put the match away earlier, as they found themselves found itself with double break opportunities tied 3-3 and 4-4 but were unable to capitalize.
Ultimately, the action came down to Cosme Rolland De Ravel and Maximus Dussault at the bottom. They swapped breaks vs. Devin Badenhorst and Calven Bairel early on en route to a 3-3 gridlock. The Baylor pair built a 6-2 lead in the tiebreaker. Rolland De Ravel got himself and Dussault within a point off pair of aces but TCU was unable to come all the way back, falling 7-6 (5).
Chan picked up his team-leading 23rd doubles victory while Bonding continues to lead TCU with wins at the top (11).
TCU won for the second time in four tries this season after dropping the doubles point.
