Senior helps TCU extend its Big 12 unbeaten streak
LAWRENCE, Kan. – The No. 10 TCU women's soccer team, behind a hat trick performance from Seven Castain, defeated 14th-ranked Kansas, 3-2, on Sunday afternoon at Rock Chalk Park.
THE RUNDOWN
The Horned Frogs (9-1, 3-0 Big 12) saw adversity early, as in the fifth minute Kansas scored off a turnover in TCU's back half to take an early 1-0 lead. TCU played nearly the next 20 minutes with its backs against the wall, with each offensive chance being quickly thwarted by the Jayhawks.
In the 24th minute, Seven Castain passed a ball into the box that touched the hand of a Kansas defender. Castain was then able to convert a penalty kick to level the game at a 1-1 ledger. The next 20 minutes was filled with mainly defense for TCU, as Kansas was itching for a second goal but was unable to find it. For the last few minutes heading into the half, the Jayhawks controlled most of the offensive stats, but the momentum was starting to trend towards TCU's direction.
The second half saw a script completely flipped, as the Frogs played pristine soccer at numerous points and were able to capitalize on multiple chances that would lead to their victory. While Kansas led the first half shot total 15-3, TCU was able to secure a 9-4 advantage in the second 45 minutes.
In the 63rd minute, Emma Yolinsky fired a shot from outside the box that was deflected by the Kansas goalkeeper. The rebound bounced out a few yards, and Castain was able to win the race and put it into the back of the net before anyone could catch up to the ball. Just over two minutes later in the 65th minute, the Draper, Utah, native struck again, this time off a rebounded save off a shot from Grace Vest that once again found Castain at the right place and time.
Even though TCU secured a 3-1 lead, it did not let anything off the gas pedal. The same possession-filled soccer that dominated the early portions of the second frame were still present, and the Frogs were looking to play the next 25 minutes and close them out.
In the 83rd minute, however, Kansas pulled within one and was looking to pull off some late-game heroics. Even with this, TCU battled and was able to go the final closing minutes without letting in a second goal to wrap up the 3-2 victory.
Olivia Geller played the full 90 minutes in goal, securing six saves in the victory for the sophomore.
