Sophomore boosts TCU to a gritty in-state victory
SAN ANTONIO – The No. 9 TCU women's soccer team pulled out a hard-fought 1-0 win over UTSA on Sunday night at Park West Athletics Complex. The two teams were gridlocked until the 81st minute of action until Cameron Patton scored off a Grace Vest cross into the box to uplift TCU past the Roadrunners.
THE RUNDOWN
The Horned Frogs (2-0) battled against UTSA early, with the Roadrunners tallying a handful of early offensive chances throughout a physical first half. TCU was able to counter off the Roadrunner's early momentum, controlling the offensive side of the ball for the later portions of the first half and firing off eight shots in the opening frame. Olivia Geller had three clutch saves to keep the match at a 0-0 stalemate heading into the final 45 minutes.
To start the second half, TCU was primarily on the defensive end of the field but held UTSA to only two shots in the first 20 minutes. Those would be the only two times UTSA tallied a shot on the rest of the game, as the Frogs flipped a switch much like the first half and went on the offensive for the back half of the second half. TCU built momentum off various offensive chances and corner kicks, earning five shots on goal during the game. The Frogs had the ball in UTSA's back half on numerous occasions in the second half, until their moment finally came in the closing 10 minutes of action.
In the 81st minute, Ally Brown passed the ball down to Grace Vest, who dribbled down the left sideline and fed a dribbler into the box. Cameron Patton was in perfect position and was able to smash it into the back of the net to give the Frogs the 1-0 lead in the final minutes. TCU was able to hold onto the advantage and continue playing gritty defense to close out the game.
Olivia Geller played the full 90 minutes in goal for TCU, notching four impressive saves.
QUOTE OF THE GAME
Overall thoughts on the game…
"What a tough team to play and a tough environment to play in. I'm really proud of our group. We overcame a lot of different adverse moments in the game and before the game with injuries, illnesses and stuff like that. We found a way to win the game. I'm really proud of our group and the way they battled, fought and stuck to the gameplan. We were able to find a goal and win it. We're 2-0, and I couldn't be more happy for this group, because they've earned it. If you look at our group from last weekend to now, we've grown a lot. This win will definitely help us as we move forward."
