5-9 guard averaged 11.2 points per game in leading Aztecs to NCAA Tournament
FORT WORTH – TCU has added another crafty lead guard to its roster as the Horned Frogs announced the signing of San Diego State leading scorer Veronica Sheffey on Tuesday.
Sheffey averaged 11.2 points and 2.9 assists per game with the Aztecs this past season en route to earning All-Mountain West Team accolades. The 5-9 guard scored in double figures 21 times while shooting 81 percent at the foul line and 37 percent from distance. Sheffey guided San Diego State to a Mountain West tournament championship and its first NCAA Tournament appearance in 13 seasons.
A rising senior, Sheffey played her first two seasons of college ball across town at San Diego. She was an all-West Coast Conference second team pick has a sophomore in 2023-24. Sheffey topped the Toreros' statistical charts in points per game (12.2), assists per game (5.1), steals per game (1.5) and assist-to-turnover ratio (1.4).
Originally from Woodinville, Wash., Sheffey will be a senior on the Horned Frogs' 2025-26 roster.
Sheffey joins a backcourt boasting three-time All-American Olivia Miles, a pair of returning starters in Donovyn Hunter and Taylor Bigby and former All-SEC standout Maddie Scherr.
Sheffey increased her scoring average to 13 points per game and was a 44 percent shooter from behind the arc during conference play this past season. She was one of only two players to start every game for the Aztecs.
Her production ratcheted up as the 2024-25 campaign shifted to postseason play. Sheffey was tabbed Mountain West Tournament MVP after leading the 4-seed Aztecs to a 72-68 triple overtime victory over Wyoming in the championship game. Sheffey paired a career-high 24 points with six rebounds, five assists and 9-10 mark at the foul line. For the tournament, Sheffey averaged 15.3 points, 4.3 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.3 steals per game across San Diego State's three-game stay in Las Vegas.
Sheffey began the year by earning Cancun Challenge All-Tournament Team honors. She stated San Diego State to two wins and a championship game appearance. Sheffey scored in double figures in all three games and dished out a career-best eight assists in the Aztecs' first round win over Wisconsin.
She eclipsed the 10-point threshold in 22-of-31 games in her second and final season with San Diego. Sheffey earned the starting nod in every game. Her assist per game average (5.1) was the third-best mark among all WCC players. Sheffey capped the 2022-23 season as one of just 20 players nationwide who averaged at least 12 points and five assists per game.
Sheffey was a WCC All-Freshman Team selection in 2022-23. She appeared in 24 games and averaged 4.1 points, 2.1 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game.
The northwest native was one of the top prep players in the greater Seattle area before heading south. Sheffey was crowned WIAA 4A State Player of the Year and led Woodinville HS to the state title as a senior in 2022. She was also a three-time first team all-conference selection and twice took home conference Defensive Player of the Year honors. Sheffey played on the AAU circuit with Way to Win Gold.
She is the sixth transfer player to sign with the Horned Frogs this spring alongside Miles, Taliyah Parker, Marta Suarez, Clara Silva and Kennedy Basham.
