WACO, Texas – David Roditi collected his 300th career head coaching victory on Friday as No. 2 TCU rolled past Oklahoma State, 4-0, and into the semifinals of the Big 12 Championship.
The Horned Frogs pocketed the doubles point via a pair of 6-4 frames on courts two and three to begin the quarterfinal dual at the Hurd Tennis Center. Lui Maxted, Duncan Chan and Roger Pascual pitched a trio of straight set singles victories to punctuate the shutout.
The Horned Frogs (22-2, 8-0 Big 12) now face No. 18 UCF (20-7, 5-3 Big 12) at 2 p.m. on Saturday for the right to play for the tournament title. TCU survived a grueling dual with the Knights on March 14 in their conference-opener in Orlando. The Frogs dropped the doubles point but rallied for a 4-2 win.
"We got a late start, but luckily the guys stepped up," Roditi said. "They beat Oklahoma State, so now we're in the semifinals against UCF. We've had nothing but battles against UCF. Proud of our guys today. We had a lot going on – two-hour delay just to get started – and then the doubles, we had some questioning over who was going to play with some health issues, and they responded really well.
"It's always a pleasure playing [coach] Dustin Taylor and his team," Roditi continued. "Well-coached team, no issues with Oklahoma State. Just an absolute battle. Now, we get a chance at UCF and a chance to continue playing in this Big 12 Championship. We'll see what we have tomorrow. It's a quick turnaround. We've got to take care of our bodies and just be ready to battle."
TCU improved its all-time Big 12 Championship record to 14-8 with Friday's result.
The Horned Frogs have claimed 16 of their last 17 head-to-heads vs. the Cowboys.
TCU, along with No. 1 Wake Forest (34-0), remains one of only two teams nationwide that has yet to taste defeat on the outdoor courts. The Frogs have won 13 straight matches since falling to the Demon Deacons, 4-3, in the ITA Indoor National Championships final on Feb. 18.
Doubles Rundown
TCU built a pair of 4-2 leads in the second and third positions and create an early bit of separation from the Cowboys (10-15, 1-6 Big 12).
Filip Apltauer and Lui Maxted put the first point on the board, downing Nicolas Kobelt and Finn Hopfe on court three.
Duncan Chan and Albert Pedrico again got the nod at two and clinched the doubles point for the second consecutive match, downing Ian Bracks and Thomas Gadecki.
Both pairs earned two break points apiece.
On court one, Jack Pinnington and Cooper Woestendick squared off with Isaac Becroft and Alessio Basile. They fell behind 1-4 but rallied to even the affair at four games all. The match was ultimately left unfinished with OSU leading 5-4 and the Frogs on serve.
TCU has now claimed seven consecutive doubles points and swelled its season record to 20-4.
Chan and Pedrico are now 11-3 as partners.
Apltauer and Maxted moved to 3-1 since first joining forces and earning their maiden victory in TCU's 4-0 defeat of Oklahoma State on April 3 in Fort Worth.
