Eighth-ranked Horned Frogs handle No. 16 West Virginia, 71-65
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – TCU will play for a clean sweep of the Big 12 regular season and tournament titles.
The eighth-ranked Horned Frogs handled No. 16 West Virginia, 71-65, on Saturday in the semifinals of the Big 12 Championship.
TCU faces the winner of Oklahoma State-Baylor at 4 p.m. on Sunday in a title game that will air on ESPN.
The Frogs' 'Big Three' of Hailey Van Lith, Sedona Prince and Madison Conner combined for 53 points. Van Lith and Prince netted a dozen apiece in the first half to stake top-seeded TCU to a 40-25 halftime edge. Conner collected 13 of her 16 points in the second half, downing 4-7 three-point attempts.
TCU (30-3, 16-2 Big 12) picked up its second victory in as many weeks over the No. 4 seed Mountaineers (24-7, 13- 5 Big 12). Saturday's win was TCU's sixth
The Horned Frogs navigated a West Virginia full court press that generates an NCAA-leading 14 steals per game. TCU finished with 19 assists against 10 turnovers and gave the ball away just four times in the first half. The Frogs' 12 turnovers were the fewest forced all season by a Mountaineers defense that averages 25 per game.
Van Lith finished with a game-high eight assists against one turnover. Donovyn Hunter dished out six dimes over her own.
TCU shot 48 percent (25-52) from the floor and knocked down 10-23 looks from deep.
Van Lith led TCU with 19 points while Prince produced an 18-point, 16-rebound and two-block double-double. Conner was 5-10 behind the arc.
West Virginia led 9-5 just over three minutes into the game but TCU quickly asserted controls. Consecutive 3-pointers by Hunter and Van Lith nudged the Frogs in front by two points, 13-11, entering the first media timeout. TCU never trailed the rest of the way.
Prince tallied a half-dozen points and rebounds in opening frame. She scored 10 of the Frogs' first 21 points.
Up 23-19, TCU rattled off an 11-0 run midway through the second quarter fueled by back-to-back 3-pointers from Agnes Emma-Nnopu and Conner. The Horned Frogs held the Mountaineers scoreless for 4:42 during the spurt. TCU then closed the half with six unanswered points.
Consecutive 3-pointers by Conner maintained a double-digit Horned Frog edge at 48-35 just under halfway through the third. A buzzer-beating half court heave by the Mountaineers' Jordan Harrison dwindled TCU's lead down to five, 52-47, entering the final period.
TCU answered back with a 10-3 run over the first 3:06 of the fourth. Van Lith, Conner and Prince scored all the points.
Conner delivered the dagger. West Virginia crawled within five points of the Frogs at 62-57 with under three minutes to play. The 5-11 sniper drilled her fifth-and-final 3-pointer from the left key. She missed on two attempts from deep on the same possession but converted off an assist from Van Lith.
JJ Quinerly scored a game-high 20 points to pace the Mountaineers.
