Vives finishes 2-0 on the day
AUSTIN, Texas - The No. 1 ranked TCU men's tennis team suffered its first loss of the season on Friday night, falling 4-1 to No. 3 Texas at the Weller Tennis Center in a rematch of the 2024 NCAA Championship
Pedro Vives led the way for TCU, finishing with a 2-0 record. He and Lui Maxted downed No. 5 Timo Legout and Lucas Brown in doubles to stake the Horned Frogs (5-1) to their first victory of the night. Vives gave TCU its lone point in singles play, defeating former teammate Sebastian Gorzny, 6-2, 6-3, in a battle of top 10 players.
"Obviously a tough one at Texas today." said head coach David Roditi. "Great match, great crowd and great organization. You have two great teams and we just came up short. Texas was too good today, the doubles point got away from us. We had match points on courts two and three and lost both of them. I do not know if that carried momentum or not. We were struggling to get points out there and they were just better than us. At the end of the day we just got to get better, we got to do better and we have to practice better. We have a tough match against Florida at home on Sunday. Hopefully we can rebound and have a good practice tomorrow and be ready for Sunday. Go Frogs!"
Doubles Rundown
The doubles point was tightly contested as courts two and three came down to tiebreakers. The Frogs secured court one but lost both tiebreakers on courts two and three.
The No. 2-ranked pair of Maxted and Vives collected their fourth win of the 2025 season as a duo, defeating Legout and Brown, 7-5. The victory marked their second win over a ranked opponent this dual season. Vives is improved to an NCAA-leading 10-0 vs. ranked players in 2024-25.
There was high drama on court two, as Jack Pinnington and Cooper Woestendick led 5-3 and were up a break on Gorzny and Pierre-Yves Bailly. However, the Longhorn duo stormed back to force a tiebreaker, ultimately winning 7-6(3).
The opening point of the match came down to court three, where Duncan Chan and Albert Pedrico also led 5-3 and earned a break. However, Jonah Braswell and Oliver Ojakaar chipped away at TCU's lead, forcing a tiebreaker. Texas won 7-6(3) to claim the doubles point.
TCU lost the doubles point for the first time all season. The Frogs had claimed 11 consecutive doubles points dating back to the program's NCAA Championship run in May. TCU is 26-4 in doubles play on the indoor courts since 2023.
