TCU tallies first draw of regular season
LUBBOCK, Texas – In a contest between the last two Big 12 regular season champions, the No. 17 TCU women's soccer team posted a 1-1 draw against 11th-ranked Texas Tech on Friday night at John Walker Soccer Complex.
THE RUNDOWN
The Horned Frogs (10-2-1, 4-1-1 Big 12) put together an overall resilient performance in a hostile environment. TCU saw a lot of adversity opening up the first half, putting only three shots up compared to Texas Tech's seven and drawing 10 fouls in a physical first 45 minutes.
The Red Raiders were able to get on the board first, striking in the 25th minute on a curled shot outside of the box that just reached over the outstretched glove of Olivia Geller. Numerous build-ups were started by TCU, but nothing major was created out of it. The two teams would head into the half with Texas Tech up 1-0.
Coming out into the second frame still trailing, the Frogs came out with a grounded style of play, staying level through the first 15 minutes of action. The Frogs were able to earn their long-awaited response in the 61st minute. After TCU earned a corner kick, Sydney Becerra lofted a ball in on the back side of the box. Morgan Brown was able to get around the Red Raider defender and head the ball into the back of the net to tie the game at a 1-1 ledger.
After Brown's goal, the two teams ramped up the intensity. TCU earned six corner kicks throughout the second half, with multiple chances almost heading on target. The Red Raiders had multiple chances inside the box but were not able to but any in the back of the net. Even with the increased energy from both sides, the top-20 showdown would ultimately end in a 1-1 draw.
Geller played all 90 minutes in goal, posting five acrobatic saves throughout the night.
QUOTE OF THE GAME
Overall thoughts…
"Texas Tech is a good team. It was a pretty hostile environment. I thought our kids battled hard for 90 minutes and battled back into the game in the second half and were able to score a goal. Happy with the battle, happy with the fight and I'm happy to come away with a point on the road. We have a big weekend coming up next weekend."
