Frogs defeat Cowgirls in Sunday showdown
FORT WORTH – The TCU women's soccer team secured a 3-1 victory over Oklahoma State on Sunday afternoon at Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium.
THE RUNDOWN
The Horned Frogs (12-2-1, 6-1-1 Big 12) saw a physical battle in the opening minutes of Sunday's matchup. Both teams committed a total of six fouls within the first eight minutes of the match as each squad was looking to break through early.
TCU would be the first team to find that breakthrough moment. In the 10th minute, Grace Coppinger fed the ball to Sydney Becerra who then proceeded to create the offense all by herself and dribble past multiple defenders and land a shot from outside the box to put TCU up 1-0 early in the match.
The Frogs would follow with another goal in the 40th minute, as Marli Galdamez passed a ball to Cameron Patton who sent a cross into the box that was met with the right foot of Grace Vest that went past the Cowgirl goalkeeper and gave TCU the 2-0 advantage. For the first half, the Frogs outshot Oklahoma State 10-1, putting three of those shots on goal and earning two corner kicks throughout the process.
Even though a new half would start, TCU would continue its goal-scoring ways. In the 54th-minute, the Frogs lobbed in a corner kick that was deflected around in the box and landed right near Emma Yolinsky. The freshman would take control of the ball then hit a hard-driven shot that would find the top of the net and put TCU up 3-0.
Oklahoma State would eventually get on the board in the 56th minute to decrease the deficit to two. Following the Cowgirls' goal, both teams would trade offensive build-ups of momentum, with the Frogs still keeping the majority of the possession. TCU would still manage to outshoot Oklahoma State 8-4 in the second half to secure the victory.
Olivia Geller played all 90 minutes in today's match and totaled one save in the win.
QUOTE OF THE GAME
Overall thoughts…
"Overall, pretty pleased with the performance. It's Sunday, it's hot and we're a little bit fatigued. I thought we took control of the game early on and scored two really good goals in the first half. We began the second half the same way, then lost our focus and they (Oklahoma State) got a goal. We saw the game out at the end, and I'm pretty pleased with the result. We'll get ourselves ready to go to Arizona and try and get two wins."
