Horned Frog duo garners conference honors after individual race wins
IRVING, Texas – After winning individual titles at the UTA Gerald Richey Invitational and helping lead TCU cross country to first place team finishes on the men's and women's side, sophomores Tate Underwood and Tabitha Ngao were named Big 12 Cross Country Runners of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday afternoon.
It marks the second weekly honor in Ngao's career, who earned the award last season after winning each of her first two collegiate races, and the first for Underwood, who made history as the first men's runner in TCU history to be named Big 12 Runner of the Week.
The Distance Frog duo led TCU to its second consecutive weekend sweep on the cross country course, claiming back-to-back team titles at the John McKenzie Invitational (Aug. 31) and UTA Gerald Richey Invitational (Sept. 7).
Ngao crossed the finish line first for the second consecutive weekend, winning the individual title at the UTA Gerald Richey Invitational. The Nairobi, Kenya, native successfully defended her title at the meet after taking the individual crown in 2023. Ngao led the TCU women, who placed first for the second weekend in a row, dropping just over 15 seconds off her time from a week ago for a season-best 17:32.4 5K and 5:39 mile pace.
Underwood stood atop the podium for the first time in his career on Saturday, Sept. 7, placing first in the men's 5K with a career-best 14:53.2. He anchored the Frogs to the team title, leading the men, who had six runners in the top 10. The San Antonio, Texas, product dropped over 17 seconds off his previous best time, averaging a 4:47 mile pace.
Ngao and Underwood are back in action on Friday, Sept. 13, when the Horned Frogs travel down to College Station for the Texas A&M Invitational.
