The sophomore ended with a 3-1 record, falling only to singles co-champion Bianca Molnar
FORT WORTH – The TCU women's tennis team concluded the TCU JAE Foundation Fall Open on Sunday, an event that featured 19 teams from around the country.
Bianca Molnar (Notre Dame) and Ava Cantanzarite (Oklahoma) were named singles co-champions. Hlahola/Murray of Texas Tech came away with the doubles championship.
Two Horned Frogs competed in the invitational – Helena Narmont and Raquel Caballero Chica.
"Raquel did the real mental and emotional work this past month preparing for this tournament," said head coach Lee Taylor Walker. "At ITA Regionals, she was doubtful about her overall game. She worked hard on her mindset, tennis, and body this past month and was very purposeful and professional in her approach."
Caballero shined in the singles draw, finishing with a 3-1 record that included wins over Missouri, SMU, and Illinois.
The sophomore started with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Missouri's Inah Canete on Thursday. She was then tested against Megan Heuser from Illinois in a three-set thriller, coming away with a 6-2, 2-6, 10-8 tiebreaker win on Friday. A few hours later, Caballero battled eventual singles champion, Molnar but could not come away with the win after three sets. Caballero bounced back on the final day of competition and was able to defeat Kayla Schefke of SMU – 4-6, 7-5, 11-9.
"I think this preparation is what allowed her to enjoy competing and play at such a high level this weekend," Walker reflected. "I am so proud of her growth and development this past month. It will be a tournament we always look back on that changed her career for the better, I am sure of that."
Narmont concluded the weekend with a 2-1 doubles record and a 1-1 singles record.
The Frogs were also able to help raise awareness for JAE Foundation with an event at Justin Boots Outlet on Friday.
"The mission of JAE Foundation is so important," said Walker. "We were grateful to partner with them and Justin Boot Outlet on Friday night to have an honest conversation about mental health and suicide prevention."
"We had over 30 coaches attend, representing 20 teams from all over the country," Walker stated. "It was a wonderful, transparent moment we shared together that built a stronger bond between the coaches. I'm confident it is going to have a positive impact for years to come."
