The Frogs went 17-7 as a team this weekend with two semifinal appearances and one finals appearance.
FORT WORTH – The TCU women's tennis team posted an impressive 17-7 record (10-5 singles, 7-2 doubles) as they wrapped up ITA Texas Regionals in Fort Worth this week.
Tomi Main and Yu-Chin Tsai made an impressive run in the semifinal round, coming back from a 6-4 deficit in the first set. The second set was won 7-6, and Main's volley in the third set clinched the victory at 11-9.
The duo made it to the doubles final round but fell short to Texas Tech's Mariia Hlahola and Avelina Sayfetdinov in two sets, 6-3 and 6-4. Jade Otway and Isabel Pascual also fell short in three sets to Texas Tech in the semifinal round on Monday.
"Overall, it was a great tournament for our team," said head coach Lee Taylor Walker. "Obviously, we wish we would've punched a ticket to the NCAA Tournament but we learned a lot and we got better. Our girls had a great performance."
The singles draw saw each individual with at least one victory and Otway and Tsai clinching three and four matches, respectively. Tsai lost her first game against Texas A&M's Daria Smetannikov but proceeded to go on a four-match run, making it to the consolation finals. Otway played her way to the main draw quarterfinals but was unable to defeat the eventual singles champion, Ariana Anazagasty-Pursoo from Texas.
"We are extremely grateful for Craig Smith, our director of tennis who did a great job running this weekend's tournament," said Walker. "Our entire staff proved to the region why TCU is such a special place and why we enjoy hosting here."
The Horned Frogs will host the TCU Jae Foundation Invitational next, set for Oct. 31 – Nov. 3 at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.
Following the invitational, TCU will have two more opportunities to qualify for NCAA Individual Championships in November. The ITA Conference Masters (Nov. 7-10) will have a draw size of 32 singles and 32 doubles with the four singles semifinalists and the top three doubles teams qualifying for NCAAs. The ITA Sectional Championship (Nov. 7-10) will have a draw size of 32 singles and 16 doubles – six singles players from each section (24 total) and three doubles teams from each section (12 total) will qualify for NCAAs. The NCAA Individual Championship will take place from Nov. 19-24 at Baylor University.
"We have four girls who are qualified for ITA Sectionals so far, which is a big deal for us," said Walker. "We're inching one step closer to NCAAs and we are excited to keep proving ourselves in future tournaments."
