Three-time All-Americans team up to win doubles titles; Fearnley claims singles crown
ESCH-SUR-ALZETTE, Luxembourg – TCU made its first splash on the professional circuit just seven days into the 2024 season.
Three-time All-Americans Jake Fearnley and Alex Rybakov teamed up in Luxembourg to win the M25 Esch/Alzette doubles championship on Saturday. Fearnley, a rising fifth-year senior, punctuated a TCU tournament sweep on Sunday, claiming the singles championship.
Fearnley and Rybakov were the top seed in a 16-team doubles draw. They downed Simon Beaupain and Lawrence Sciglitano, 3-6, 6-3, [10-7] in the semifinals. The duo pitched a 6-3, 6-3 straight set victory against Raphael Calzi and Amaury Raynel in Saturday's finale.
Fearnley won seven consecutive matches en route to the singles chalice after playing his way through qualifying onto the main draw. Six of his victories came in straight sets. Fearnley ousted top overall seed Yanik Erel via a 6-0, 6-4 semifinal sweep. He triumphed over Jonas Forejtek 6-4, 6-4, in the championship match.
Saturday's result signified Rybakov's first professional championship since 2021. Rybakov, who earned three sets of ITA singles All-American credentials from 2017-2019, has been ranked as high as No. 289 in the ATP singles rankings and 315th in doubles.
Fearnley has now bagged five M25 or ATP Challenger Tour titles over the last six months. He swept the M25 Edgebaston singles and doubles championships in October. Fearnley won the ATP Challenger Rothesay Open Men's Doubles Championship four months prior on his way to earning a wild card onto the main doubles draw of The Championships, Wimbledon 2023.
The Edinburgh, Scotland native ascended to a career-best ATP doubles ranking of No. 264 in November. He will likely break into the top-600 of the singles tables following Sunday's result.
Fearnley is expected to anchor the top of TCU's singles and doubles lineups this spring. A three-time All-Big 12 first team honoree, Fearnley has produced a 124-53 combined overall record on the purple courts. He is three wins shy of earning his 100th career victory in duals.
TCU commences the 2024 campaign at 5:30 p.m. on Jan. 24 vs. Abilene Christian. The Horned Frogs garnered the No. 4 preseason ITA team ranking on Wednesday.
